I liked the books too (just read them last summer) but there are issues with it that make me think the author didn't think everything through.

Peeta! He's my favorite character but I also didn't get the point of his being kidnapped except that this allowed time for Gale/Katniss to develop, which we hadn't see much of once the games started in Book 1. I guess it was supposed to confused Katniss and, in a way, get her to be conflicted as to who she should ultimately choose. But then in the end, this all didn't matter as Suzanne Collins decided to make Gale less likable with his decisions in the final book, which of course made Katniss hate him (or at least dislike him a whole lot).

The battle scene at the very end wasn't much, I agree. And I felt shortchanged too. But really, if you think about it, since the books are from Katniss's POV, we didn't get to see a lot that we the readers wanted to see: the battle, the families at home while the games are being televised, Peeta's treatment in the Capitol, major characters death scenes (like Finnick's). This could be it or maybe Collins was just lazy and didn't want to write too much about others for whatever reasons.

Prim dying also was just not cool. I mean, the whole point of Katniss being in the games was to protect Prim and save her life. And she did! And that should've been one triumph that Katniss could always have. Instead, though, Prim dies (no major death scene either) and Gale is kinda at fault and Katniss hates him and herself a bit. Sad but stupid too.

Killing Coin was the last way to get rid of all tyrannical oppression that Katniss and all the rest of the people had been fighting for for most of their lives. Yes, Coin wasn't a Capitol robot but she had crazy, maniacal ideas that could've one day resulted in another cruel and unfair society so I guess Katniss needed to get rid of her and all that. Maybe?

Great thoughts, btw. Thanks for sharing (and ranting)!
