Ivan dreams. Sometimes there are nightmares. Visions from the past, thoughts about the future, realities from the present. All of them build, in tiny little ways. But sometimes there are dreams of sunflowers and warm places. Once, not to long ago, Ivan remembers when his dream was invaded in tiny little ways, turned different from the way they usually go. The sun still shines and the flowers still grow, but there was someone there who didn't belong. And all Ivan could think of, beneath the peace and quiet in his dreams, was how much he wanted him to leave.

Sometimes, Ivan had friends. Long ago, back when he was young. They were allies. For the time being. Then they all went away. Some of them attacked him, while treaties were discussed and winter grew closer. Some of them moved on, to people who they used to hate but preferred to him. And so Ivan learned to play these games, where you said one thing but meant another. Where "friend" meant "foe" and "forever" meant "for now". And so when Minato said he was his friend, Ivan laughed and remembered his games.

Ivan stands in the ruins of a city. There's blood in the streets and rubble in the sidewalks. And there's someone there now, who's name is Minato. Why he's there, Ivan doesn't know. He knows that whatever he's planning can't be good. He knows that this can't end well, when the soldiers begin to shout into the smoky sky. And he knows, more than anything, that this will result in nothing but pain. Well. He asked for it, didn't he? When he said he'd be his friend.

Ivan talks to him, sometimes. And hears stories, from other people. About how Minato tends to mean what he says. That he's their friend. And he wonders when they'll realize how blind they are. He tells him the truth, sometimes, when they talk. About how he's the villain. About how he's wrong. And whenever Minato answers, Ivan waits for the lies to become clearer. They always lie. All of them. Even when they seem to tell the truth.

There's a hand on his scarf, and for one horrible moment Ivan thinks his scarf'll be taken away. And in that horrible moment, Ivan hates Minato more than anyone else in the world.

Sometimes, Ivan dreams. And in those dreams, there are people with him. Someone who claims to be an angel, but will not smite him. Someone who plays guessing games and seems so very old and yet so very young. Someone who claims he invented everything, and seems so very proud of him. Someone who wants to be his friend, and learns how in many tiny ways. Someone who speaks with Germany sometimes and Russia tomorrow. And there are so many someones in these dreams, where there are sunflowers and the sun shines. But mostly, he dreams of a friend named Minato, who talks to him and is not scared of him. And sometimes, he wishes he could believe that in reality. But he knows that is not possible.
