She goes after him because she can't stand the sight of him walking away. (Again.)
The edge of the dock feels like the edge of the world. He stands up fast, reckless, and for a moment she is desperately, irrationally afraid. Afraid that he'll jump in, disappear beneath the blue blue waves, his voice low in her ear, his taste still warm in her mouth, three years ago and a million miles away from here. Afraid that he'll leave her.
The ring flips through the air, suspended in time, and she wants to cry, scream: stop it. Open your fucking eyes. Don't you give up. I'm right here.

Whatever Boone would like to think, she isn't stupid and she isn't always a selfish self-righteous bitch. She tells Boone she doesn't want him here and makes Bryan refuse his money, promises to pay him more. She can't afford it, but he doesn't know that. Boone stares back before she shuts the door in his bratty little babyface and the look in his eyes--cold, hurt, mean--is enough to make her want to vomit up her lunch. He'll fly home and forget all about her and she'll suck it up. Show him. She can clean up her own mess. She doesn't need a hero. (She definitely doesn't need him.)

They go out for lunch in the middle of the winter. The sun is pale and distant and LA is nothing but cement and parking garages. Sun hates it. She is in town just for a day--"on business," she says, and smiles--and Jack has nothing better to do. He cleared his schedule just for her, he says, and laughs. The bitterness bleeds from his dark desperate eyes. She just wants to talk, she says. Just to catch up.
"I'm all yours."
She raises her eyebrows and touches his hand, brings it away ice-cold. "Good," she says. The gun is heavy in her handheld purse. She doesn't want to lie.

Her eyes are so wide and so blue that he is almost (not quite, not really, not at all) afraid. She looks much more innocent and much less human than she ever really was. He feels much more frightened than he really has a right to be. She grabs his wrist and his fingers spasm, the gun dropping to the floor. The Temple is empty. Everyone else is fast asleep or already dead. She sighs and it doesn't make a sound.
"No," he says. "You're dead. You're dead." I killed you. She shakes her head and opens her mouth to speak. Her teeth glisten.
"You have work to do, Jack."

Kate knows how it will be. Jack will show up one day, flowers in his hands and an apology in his eyes. Aaron will stop asking for bedtime stories. She knows this because she knows Jack.
He does come by, just once. To pick up his things. She makes sure that Aaron is watching his cartoons. She stands silently in the doorway as he rifles through the closet, rummages through the drawers. She turns away when he surreptitiously retrieves a tiny golden canister from beneath the bedskirt. Liar, liar, pants on fire--she hears her mother in her head. You can't help who you love, Katherine. Can't even try.

She stays with her sister through the healthy pregnancy and the even more normal birth, and when Julian is six months old she gets married and quits her old job on the same day. Dr. Shephard, the new doctor at the hospital where she is going to work--where Rachel gave birth. He's from LA, but he "needed a change" and so here he is. She's in love. Rachel doesn't trust him.
"He could be a serial killer for all you know, Jules." Juliet only shakes her head. Jack could never hurt her. She'd trust him with her life.

He’s not going to say sorry. Not ever again. Once-but once was forever ago and away on that tarmac at LAX. Not much has changed since then. Only the level of crazy has. She knows that now. It didn’t work, and he’s resigned himself to that and she should resign herself to the fact that he’ll never be able to understand what would have happened if it had.
She’ll go back once she finds Claire. She’ll go back. She’ll have nowhere else to go-and if Jack saved her once, maybe he’ll talk himself into doing it again. For old times’ sake. (For her-or for him.)
