There is a woman in the bar. Her hair is long, shadowing her face from view, her fingers clasped around a sweating glass--orange juice. She looks his way, and nods, shaking blond strands from her bright eyes. He grimaces, tears welling up, pathetic. She swallows.
"Whatcha celebrating?"
He shrugs, prickles of elapsed energy running up and down his spine, sinking further into his jacket, pills in his pocket rattling. His voice is a dull radio-sound above the clinking glass. Bad reception. "My dad died." He coughs out a sudden laugh. (So did you.)
She blinks quickly, looking down at the bar, jaw working. "My sister."
"Sorry," he mutters, voice cracking.
