when someone you love has terminally lost perspective (betrayed or abused or neglected past hope of recovery), you could say he's "gone viral". there are exceptions, but standard operating procedure for viruses is:

as much as you may want to jump straight to the "destroy" part of the procedure, "containing" is a prerequisite; it's not a choice to do one, the other, or both. a virus pervades the host's body; somehow one must reliably distinguish the pathology from self.
