Current Characters: Temperance Brennan, Harumi Fujiyoshi, Buffy Summers, Takashi Natsume, Yuri Nakamura
Character: Rory Flanagan
Fandom: Glee
Character Notes: Spoilers for season three below. Also, I would like to note that Rory's only been in three episodes so far (only two where he had actual lines), so that's why this isn't the most extensive application I've ever submitted. I tried my best though!
History: Rory Flannegan is a foreign exchange student from Ireland who is staying with Brittany. Brittany believes that he is a leprechaun and informs him that he can get into her "pot of gold" if he grants her three wishes. Instead of telling her the truth, Rory agrees and sets out on granting her three wishes after convincing her that other people can only see him because he lets them, because getting laid sounds like a pretty good deal for doing someone a few favors.
Wish the First: An all-marshmallow box of Lucky Charms cereal. Rory claims that Lucky the leprechaun is his cousin, then heads off to go separate all of the marshmallows from the rest of the Lucky Charms to fulfill this. While he's "granting" this wish, Finn approaches him to figure out what the hell is going on. Rory proceeds to introduce himself as a huge fan of Finn after seeing the video of him tongue-kissing Rachel during Nationals on YouTube.
Rory also reveals that he loves America, and is especially a fan of NASCAR, the "half-black president," and Victoria's Secret catalogs. He tells Finn that he really wants to snog Brittany and he basically has no friends on account of being a foreign exchange student (probably because he gets pulled and told to "go back to Mexico"). He expected America to be a lot friendlier because they always portray the image of different people coming together and accepting one another, but Finn tells him that's not it anymore.
So then he just smiles and goes "Would you be my friend Finn?" Rory wants all the friends and Finn shall be his first, after Finn corrects him that dudes just don't ask other dudes to be their friend (except on Facebook, though it may take years) because it's against the rules of... American manliness or something. He only agrees on the condition that Rory keep an eye out for any talk from Brittany about switching out of New Directions and into the new glee club.
The bullying continues, even as he calls his mother to lie and tell her he's got a ton of friends so that she doesn't worry. (One broken cell phone is a go.) He presents the all-marshmallow box of Lucky Charms to Brittany, the one thing that's really keeping him from giving into all of the bullying, and she's clearly pleased then presents him with her second wish: for Lord Tubbington to poop candy bars. He doesn't really respond much to that and instead asks Brittany out to dinner, but Brittany rejects him because she's got plans with a friend... and leprechauns aren't supposed to eat anything but four leaf clovers. (Which begs the question, how is he eating at her house to get around that? It may very well be possible that he has to sneak around to eat regular food.)
Rory breaks out into the song "It's Not Easy Being Green." That's right, Rory can sing! Really pleasantly, actually. It's clear that it's all getting to him, but Brittany's definitely keeping him going. That is, until Santana finds out that Rory has a crush on Brittany and tells him that if he's a leprechaun, he's gay and she gets a wish too. Rory conveys Santana's wish to Brittany, that Brittany join the new glee club. Despite that he knows Finn wouldn't like that, he's more afraid of Santana than he is of Finn and Finn's his friend so he'll understand, right? So Rory gets Brittany to join it and the girls create the Troubletones after granting her second wish and putting Baby Ruths in Lord Tubbington's litter box.
Rory immediately goes to inform Finn that Brittany's joining the Troubletones after that and Finn tells Brittany off for being stupid, so Brittany finds out that leprechauns aren't real and tells Rory to back off. Santana waits until Brittany's out of earshot and tells Rory she has another wish: for him to do the whole school a favor and just disappear.
Luckily, Finn's still got his back so there is one thing that saves him from being completely alone: The New Directions. Rory joins with a killer solo of "Take Care of Yourself" that displays his vocal capabilities and range to the rest of the glee club. This is also the point at which he stops consistently wearing green, indicating that he's done pretending to be something he's not in order to impress a girl, and is now ready to join a group that works to embrace who they are as individuals.
Even after he joins the New Directions, it's not like the bullying stops because of that and it doesn't seem as though that many people pay attention to him besides Finn. In fact, when McKinley High's two glee clubs have a "mash-off" (mash-up face off between the New Directions and Troubletones), Finn suggests that Rory take the solo. Blaine supports Rory, despite that Finn is clearly still on his shut-out-Blaine campaign. So when Finn goes out of the way to try to insult Santana, Rory accompanies him with some really horrible insults. ("You're skinny like all the crops failed on your family's farm!")
This verbal brawl ends in dodgeball, a game which Rory has no idea how to play and ends up playing anyway. At the end, he comes over to Finn smiling because he had fun, even if it was really bracing, then Santana gets the rest of the Troubletones to bombard him with dodgeballs until he starts bleeding, stopping only when Kurt starts yelling to stop and coming to his rescue. Kurt helps Rory, who is almost in tears, out of the gym.
Rory continues following Finn around like a little duckling and even stands up to Santana when she comes over to start making fun of Finn again. He backs off when she says she's going to apologize, then hangs around to wait for Finn when Finn dishes out the comebacks for Santana's rather extremely rude and mean "apology."
The day of the face-off comes and Finn and Rory get to be the two main male singers in their mashup of "I Can't Go for That (No Can Do)" and "You Make My Dreams" and demonstrates his further ability of showmanship before the presidential debate for the student council president position. Kurt declares his war on bullying and banning dodgeball after Rory's earlier demise at the game. Rory even stands up to applaud, shortly followed by Blaine.
Personality: Rory's a foreign exchange student, so a lot of what he knows about the world he comes from is different than what actually happens in Lima. His idea of America gave him the impression that it was a place where everyone would be accepted, regardless of their differences, so he experiences culture shock a lot in his time at McKinley High when he finds that he's completely alone, bullied, and the only person who will talk to him is the girl he's living with, who thinks he's a magical creature who will grant her wishes.
Friends are basically what Rory wants more than anything. He's a really lonely guy at first because he really doesn't have anyone, he's in a foreign land, and everyone's basically an ass because he has an accent. After meeting Finn, one of the first things he asks him is if he'll be his friend, and Finn basically tells him that it's not cool to ask things like that. Rory wants to make friends and he knows to do that he has to figure out how to fit in, so he follows Finn's example. He's extremely naive about acceptable behaviors for men in American society and Finn is Rory's "ideal" example of a man, so to speak, so he ends up following him around like an extremely socially awkward duckling.
Still, he's pretty open about what he wants/needs/doesn't understand. Openly telling Finn that he's a virgin and wants to get with Brittany when they first meet is a pretty good example of that. Even though he's very open about those sorts of things, he seems to be a pretty shy kind of guy and considers himself to really blend in with the scenery for every part of him that isn't just the branded "Irish" label that seems to be stuck to his forehead. His first song, Being Green, is entirely about him meaning basically nothing to anyone and being practically invisible when people aren't slamming him into lockers.
He doesn't really stand up for himself much when he's bullied, which is probably why it keeps happening. Luckily, Finn seems to grow attached to him pretty quickly and takes it upon himself to defend Rory and be his buddy. In a short period of time, Rory starts to stand up for Finn, which demonstrates that he can be protective of his friends, even if he's not protective of himself.
Unfortunately, Rory's desire for friends has a negative impact sometimes, like with Santana. He convinced Brittany to join the Troubletones because he wanted to get along with Santana, though part of it may have been that he was afraid of what would happen if he didn't listen to Santana. He also lied to Brittany, a lot, because he just wanted her to like him. (And he wanted her "pot of gold," but a lot of him was just happy that she liked him.) The lying came back to bite him in the ass when Brittany found out that leprechauns weren't real and he almost lost any and all friendship he had because of it. Rory was lucky that Finn liked him by that point or else Finn probably wouldn't have understood that he was just trying to make friends, even if it was through relatively manipulative methods.
It's probably best to note that while he was making people happy or, in the case of his mother, trying to keep them from worrying that his reasons for lying weren't because he wanted them to be happy. Rory seems to be extremely goal-oriented, even if his goals appear to be relatively harmless like losing his virginity to a girl he fancies or making sure mom doesn't worry, they're all for essentially selfish reasons, but he does seem to tone it down after Brittany tells him off for it. Sneaking around and tricking people to protect themselves or gain for themselves, all in all, is actually kind of leprechaun-like in nature, whether they're real or not so in this way Rory really as similar to a leprechaun.
Rory's second song is "Take Care of Yourself" by Teddy Thompson. This is the first song he sings to New Directions as his audition song, which is surprising because it's a song about saying goodbye to a loved one. It may be an odd choice, but it kind of recognizes that he's not going to be able to be with Brittany like he'd originally hoped, but he's wishing her well because he cares about her. This makes him appear as though he's very much not a vindictive sort of character, which contrasts with a lot of the characters who seem to be dominating the spotlight lately. Instead of fighting back, he accepted that he had done wrong and just wished her well as she moved on from him.
All in all, the best words to describe him are just Finn's awkward duckling who just wants friends and maybe tries a little too hard to get them.
Other:
He really likes U2. He won't ever say they're underrated, even when he's about to get his face bashed in.
He wears a Claddagh ring with the heart pointing away from his heart. (AKA Single.)

Being GreenTake Care of Yourself First Person (entry type):
I only got off the plane a few hours ago and I'm exhausted, but I can't really sleep right now, you know? It's really exciting, finally being in America. The family I'm staying with has this daughter, Brittany. Oh!
[ Such a smile. ]
She's the best. Brittany's one of the nicest people I've ever met. I mean, she thinks I'm a leprechaun, which is a little odd but she seems to like it? So it's not that bad a deal, I don't think. Can't wait until school starts Monday, though. Did you know Finn Hudson goes to this school? He's the reason I picked it for my foreign exchange school. Seeing someone have the guts to do that with their girlfriend on stage is just impressive.
[ Smile turns to a bigger grin. ] I can't wait!
Third Person:
As awkward as it was after his first week at school, Rory still lived with Brittany. During the course of it, he'd managed to get Brittany to stop talking to him for the most part. He still liked her, of course, but he wasn't going to push her to keep treating him as though he was some kind of magical creature. Still, it'd be nice if they could still be friends.
At least Lord Tubbington still liked him. Rory paused from doing his laundry to kneel down and scratch the cat's ears, smiling as the overweight animal kneeled into his touch. He was pretty sure Brittany didn't hate him at least, but he wasn't in a position where he was going to be getting hugs any time soon.
He pet the cat for a few more seconds before Lord Tubbington appeared to lose interest, then Rory stood up and went back to the laundry and started humming a tune from his homeland. As much as he loved America, it had been pretty disappointing until he met Finn, and he did miss home. He still had to go get a new cell phone later today, considering that guy from the hockey team broke his in the middle of his conversation with Mommy. Maybe he could get one of those new models. Maybe having the newest phone would mean he'd be marginally cooler and wouldn't get beat up so much. On the other hand, if it didn't he'd probably be out some $200 if it broke again.
Finn had given him his phone number though, so he supposed it didn't really matter if it was a great phone or not since he definitely had at least one friend. He just hoped it was okay for one dude to call another dude just to talk.
