Hagrid snuffled into his handkerchief, carefully looking out at the lake and ignoring the boy by his side.
‘Hagrid?’
‘Never really had a friend before. Not a’ school, that was fer sure, wouldn’ see the likes o’ them associatin’ with a lummox like me.” He looked up at Harry then, and smiled a little. “Yeah, Harry, Gryffindors that wouldn’ speak to me ‘cos of what I was. Y’know the sad thing? When Tom… when he found me ‘n’ Aragog… I was pleased that ‘e remembered my name.’
‘I’m your friend, Hagrid.’
Hagrid looked up at him again, an unfathomable expression in his dark eyes, something strange, and scary, and new. He looked out at the lake again, and sighed.
‘Go along inside, now, Harry. Go.’
