Personality:
Phoenix is a curious person, and believes in helping those who can't help themselves. He's kind hearted, and definitely means well. On the surface, Phoenix is a nice, simple and well-rounded guy. He's friendly to most anyone, loyal to all his friends and he’s more often than not ready to help anyone and everyone out. He’s a little naïve at first, trusting his clients without so much of a double take, and sometimes he tends to jump to the wrong conclusions.
To himself, Phoenix is a very sarcastic person. He always has something to say, no matter what the situation is, and although he may not say it out loud, you can bet he’s thinking something cynical. As the games go on, he slowly loses sight of his moral compass, and he becomes slightly jaded. Although his heart is still in the right place, experience tells him that not everyone is what they seem.
It’s often been suggested that Phoenix is an atrocious liar, and is clearly unable to lie his way out of any type of bag, let alone a paper one. When he’s nervous or needs time to think, he cleans the bathroom-usually the toilet- and when he’s hit rock bottom, he usually needs someone else to pull him back up. He has momentary spouts of weakness-who doesn’t?-it’s his ability to pick himself up and look at things from a whole new angle that gets him through the toughest of situations.
His eagerness to set things right in the world definitely plays a huge part in who he is, as he’s constantly fighting for the greater good. He's driven, and he's happy to put anything on the line to make sure his client gets that 'not guilty' verdict. He's good at figuring out even the most oddest of puzzles, and he'll keep at it until he figures out everything there is to figure out. He’s very smart, although he may play it down somewhat. He’s always watching those around him, even when he’s relaxing. He’s actually pretty aware, although he acts oblivious to most things.
Fears:
Weaknesses:
When he can’t see a way out of something, his brain seems to shut down and he goes into a spiral of self loathing. He’s very dependent on those around him for emotional support, and although he may not act it all the time, his friends are extremely important to him. He hates feeling as though he’s useless, and he has to try and help in some way, even if it’s simply talking something through.
He's almost too trusting, and although it could be seen as a strength, putting his faith in everyone can be extremely hard at times.
But most of all, he's only human.
Strengths/Abilities:
He’s able to see things for what they really are. He’s a good judge of character, and he’s always trying to do the right thing. He sees clues in almost everything, and he truly believes in humanity. He’s smart, he’s loyal and he’s trusting. He has only one real ability, and that's only when he's carrying the Magatama; which can sense when people are telling lies or have a darkness in their heart that they wish to hide; when this happens, psyche locks form.
These psyche locks can be broken with the correct amount of questioning, and only if Phoenix has enough information or suspicion for him to seriously question the other person.
History:
When Phoenix was in kindergarten, he was accused of stealing Miles Edgeworth’s money. The entire class turned on him, and no one would believe that he was innocent. When he felt as though he didn’t have a friend in the world, Miles Edgeworth stood up for him and demanded a class trial. His father was a defense attorney, and he did all he could to help. Larry Butz soon joined in, and in the end, Miles managed to prove Phoenix’s innocence and the three of them became best friends. Months later, Miles suddenly disappeared from school without so much as a goodbye.
Fast forward a few years to when Phoenix was in art school, studying to become an actor. He’d heard rumours about one Miles Edgeworth being the “demon prosecutor”. He’s mostly shocked at how different his friend seems to be, and after years of trying to search for him (unanswered calls, ignored letters and many failed contact attempts) Phoenix realizes that the only way he’ll ever speak to his old friend again is if he becomes a defense attorney.
He takes up a part-time degree studying law. Whilst studying at the courthouse, Phoenix meets Dahlia Hawthorne and they hit it off straight away. Dahlia gives him a necklace as a first meeting present, and they start dating. Little did Phoenix know that the necklace contained traces of poison and that on the very day she and Phoenix met, she had been summoned there to testify against an innocent person. Dahlia got off free, because they couldn’t find sufficient enough evidence to put her into jail. Six months later, Dahlia tries to poison Phoenix using his cold medicine, but the bottles end up being switched. Phoenix is taken into custody under the suspicion of murdering Doug Swallow, and Mia Fey becomes his defense attorney. She gets him a not guilty verdict and Dahlia is taken to prison.
Fast forward a couple of years to a bright eyed and bushy tailed Phoenix, just finishing his first case as a defense attorney and winning. He’s Mia Fey’s apprentice, and everything seems to be going right for once-well, as right as it could be when your first case is defending your so-called-best friend that he promised to defend as a first case. Subsequently, Larry is found not guilty, but that would be the only case in which Mia supervised alive.
The next case involves one Maya Fey, who discovers her sister’s (Mia Fey’s) dead body at Fey & Co’s law offices. With Maya’s name written on a piece of paper in blood, the detectives take her into custody under the suspicion of the murderer. Phoenix insists on giving her a fair trial and he later wins the case. He and Maya become friends, with Maya as his aide. He seemingly pays her in burgers.
Phoenix soon comes up against Edgeworth in court. The rumours Phoenix had been hearing about (Edgeworth doing anything to get a win, including fabricating evidence) appeared to be true. He wonders where his friend went so wrong, and decides that this can’t be the real Edgeworth. He battles him in court a few more times before Edgeworth confronts Phoenix and explains that he has been saddled with “unnecessary feelings” and explains that his life would be much simpler if Phoenix had never shown up; leaving a dumbstruck Phoenix in his wake.
But it wouldn’t be long before the two meet again. After watching a special news bulletin on TV, Phoenix discovers that Edgeworth has been accused of shooting someone. Phoenix rushes down to the detention center and insists on helping him out. Edgeworth, full of pride, outwardly refuses, and when questioned why, he states that no defense attorney in their right mind would take on this case, and that Phoenix simply doesn’t have enough experience. Phoenix continues to insist, and eventually wins Edgeworth over when he realizes no one else will defend him. Through this case, we find out why Edgeworth had left school all those years ago, and why he became a prosecutor instead of a defense attorney.
Although Phoenix won the case, and Edgeworth had been declared innocent, Edgeworth became ashamed of actions as a prosecutor. Phoenix later found a suicide note saying “Prosecutor Miles Edgeworth Chooses Death" and felt betrayed, not to mention upset-and thus we enter the aptly named “pissed!girlfriend!Phoenix phase.
His first case after Edgeworth's disappearance is important simply because the murderer hit him on the head with a fire extinguisher and he got amnesia-- but it worked out in the end, and Phoenix remembered everything he needed to remember to get him put away for life. The next case takes him to Maya's home; Kurain Village. This is where he met Pearl Fey, Maya's cousin, for the first time. Chronologically, this case should come before the actual first case of the game, but... Capcom decided to screw with our heads, or something.
A surgeon by the name of Turner Grey sought Phoenix out as a part of a deal struck between Maya and himself. She was to channel a spirit for him, but she would only do it if she could see Phoenix first. So Phoenix happily agreed, and off they went to Kurain village. Now, as with all things do in Phoenix's life-- it went wrong. Turner Grey was murdered in a locked room, and the only other person in there with him was Maya. Phoenix refused to believe Maya could commit a murder, and so he once again took up the position of defending her.
Now, the reason this phase is called “pissed!Girlfriend!Phoenix” is because, when little Pearl Fey brings up Edgeworth, Phoenix completely freaks out, telling her not to mention his name around Phoenix ever again-this is important, as it’s really the only time you see Phoenix give into his anger during the game series!
