To be read in Mako's voice.
See this painting; it is one of the ancient tools of war. In those days the kings of the world did not wish to endanger their subjects, so they built men out of smoke and iron to do war on their enemies.
The ancients did not pass on their mechanical arts to us, so the four nations have developed other ways to power their clockwork armies. The people of the sky make windmill-men, slender wooden creatures covered in spinning wings. You should see them! It is like watching a flock of hungry birds. The Mountain Tiger of the East is propelled by a herd of bison; made to stampede, they turn a great wheel in its belly. You are familiar with the war-marionettes and the giant balloons we hang them from.
The water people have the strangest war-machine of all, a giant made of slowly melting ice. After seven years at the siege of Jiichin-Sil, his icy sword finally cut through the Imperial Palace's floors, and sliced the city's throne in two.
Now two demikings sit in Jiichin-Sil, and it has fallen from its former glory, because they cannot agree on anything.
