Jon actually met Spencer first. Spencer had been outside a venue watching them load up after a show and Jon had put him to work. This happened a few more times, till one night Spencer actually came inside to watch the show and brought Ryan with. Ryan watched everything with an air of disinterest on his face, but then Spencer leaned over to whisper something into his ear and he smiled. Jon's breath caught and he knew he wanted to see that again, wanted to make him smile like that.
their first date was a disaster. Jon was late, so they had to walk to a different theater where Jon ran into one of his exes. (she was from a pack in Rockford and there had been whispers about a marriage until it was made very clear she was very much not his type.) Jon found out Ryan had a mild allergy to shellfish (Ryan mentioned this just before Jon started to pull into the parking lot at Red Lobster.) and a waiter spilled a drink all over Ryan's pants. But Ryan still held his hand and kissed him on the cheek when Jon dropped him off. He counted it as a win.
when Spencer went missing, he thought he knew what had happened, and knew Urie wasn't the worst person Spencer could have been turned by. (he could have Beckett for a sire, like Pete) but he still dropped everything to run to be with Ryan.
later after everything, years and years later, Jon asked, and Ryan called him a moron and told him he'd been waiting five years for him to ask. Jon was nervous, first moons can be rough, but Ryan just nuzzled his ear and bounced off, ready for a chase.
