Character: Ghanima Atreides
Series: Children of Dune (miniseries)
Character Age: 15
Canon: Once a world extolled for its deposits of a precious commodity called Spice that extends life and allows safe space travel, Arrakis has now fallen into political ruin after the loss of its messianic Emperor, Paul Atreides. Alia, Paul’s sister, now struggles with her slow descent into madness after taking over the place of her brother, as well as the upbringing of his twin children. Unfortunately, she has buckled under the pressure. Arrakis’-no, humanity’s-only hope now is the twins, Leto and Ghanima, who were born with the memories of their past ancestors, which is the very same condition that’s causing Alia’s madness. But unlike her, they seem capable of using it to their advantage.

Ghanima doesn’t believe herself to be as strong as her brother, but her behaviors indicate otherwise. Whether it’s through her quick-wit or careless fun, or in how she mulls things over before coming to a solid, pointed conclusion, that strength shines through every weighted decision she makes. More balanced than whimsical, Ghanima believes in the value of honesty over unnecessary lies and half-truths. However, she is hardly brusque; Ghanima’s balance gives her caution when it comes to others’ sensitivity. This is where much of her warmth and cheer also tends to show, though she tends more toward a contemplative and withdrawn disposition. Embedded with both a strong sense of self-preservation and the need to protect her loved ones, Ghanima is more than capable of showing a ruthless side. More than anything, Ghanima’s unique condition allows her vast maturity and wisdom, and it helps her understand the weight of time and the consequences for setting things as they should be.

Sample Post:

It’s impossible to tell what will drive someone far enough to defeat even the laws that guide our existences: a thirst for knowledge or a thirst for revenge. Here it seems you have accomplished much for both ends, and for that, Elizabeth, you are to be commended. You have created a world with seemingly infallible control for the sake of these purposes, giving the ones trapped the illusion that they will never leave. If you had different goals, you could be worshiped for your deeds.

Truthfully, I don’t know that you’re actually listening. But I know you have the tools to do that if you wanted! The toucans can inform you of anything you need to know, and the tentacle creature has enough long limbs to be fitted with transmitting devices. Yet neither of these things happen, do they? Why, Elizabeth? Are you afraid of what you might hear? After all, it seems that everyone has determined a different reality for your camp than what you originally envisioned. They haven’t recognized the history, the trials you’ve gone through, all of your strenuous work ... To be honest, I’m not as appreciative as I should be. Being trapped for an indeterminate amount of time has never suited me, even if I know your true intentions. But let’s not tread there, lest I bore you with what you’ve heard many times before.

You can rest assured, then, that there are other reasons for me to try and hope for your attention. For what I have noticed more than anything are the problems that this place now faces. You must make a choice. That isn’t to say you should stop with all the elaborate and embarrassing displays coupled with humorous signs; they really are quite clever and make for daring conversation pieces. And that isn’t to say that you should regulate your weather patterns a little better, either. That would cut down on the reactions from your campers. Even with warnings, there are always different results. I understand that much. But it is in how you acquire these people that the problem lies. Your consistent tendency to drag them here has finally turned into a worse situation: their worlds are now in danger. What was a camp once left unmarked has now drawn attention from a creature that is even stronger than you. It is one thing to let outsiders set up an amusement park. It is another to put your very lifeblood in danger.

For whatever reason there is, you have failed to do the one thing that you’ve always been commended for: protect the camp. While you have created a place where time can be manipulated for multiple circumstances to happen all at once, time cannot change what is to come. And when the fearsome being comes, you’ll only be left with this time; this loneliness. Perhaps it’s your fear of this that’s made you immovable-or perhaps it’s pride that makes you feel like you have forever. But that’s unforgivable.

Time can only be conditional for so long. You have a choice to make. Will you continue to ignore me, as well as ignore the efforts of others who fight to protect their loved ones even if they may not appreciate your efforts in giving them loved ones, or will you set things right?
