Worthy Dramas

Thanksgiving break is almost over and I’ve pretty much done nothing so far. Thankfully I don’t have much homework and studying to do. Well, that’s what I’m telling myself. Pretty soon it will hit me that I have finals in three weeks, but for now I’m just going to think about things that aren’t stressful.

I finished the k-drama You're Beautiful last night and overall I liked it. It was cute and lacked the usual amount of melodrama that generally plagues k-dramas. I know a lot of people love k-dramas, but I’m not one of them. They have always been way too dramatic and drawn out for me, so I rarely ever finish a series. I don’t mean to put them down, but they’re really not my cup of tea. This is only the second series that I finished behind Coffee Prince, so I think it’s worth a watch. Just in case anyone doesn't know what it is about, I will give a brief description of the plot. It's about a girl who has to disguise herself as her twin brother in a band made up of all boys. Obvious obstacles ensue. It's pretty straight forward. There is a more dramatic storyline that deals with the parents of the two leads, but there are plenty of funny moments in each episode.

Now that that is over, I'm going to stick to only J-dramas. Right now, I'm watching Liar Game season 2, Tokyo Dogs, Samurai High School, and JIN, though I'm behind on JIN. All four are keeping my attention, so I would recommend them all. If you liked Liar Game season 1 then I don't see any reason you wouldn't like season 2. So far it has the same crazy colors and is just as fun and entertaining as the last season. Tokyo Dogs and Samurai High School are both hilarious and both have hot leads, so really they can't go wrong.

I'm not a fan of Mizushima Hiro’s exaggerated character, but it's still watchable. People have said that the stereotypes about Japan and America are pretty bad in Tokyo Dogs: Oguri Shun plays a stiff cop from America who goes for everything very aggressively and is not afraid to use his gun. The stereotypes are there but only to add hilarity to the drama; they shouldn't be taken seriously. Some people don't like it, but I honestly think it's funny.

I have only watched two episodes of JIN, but so far it does a good job juxtaposing today with the Edo period. The characters of Osawa Takao and Ayase Haruka are both very likable. I’m very curious to find out what will happen over the course of the season.

I was a little hesitant to watch Samurai High School because I wasn’t sure how it would turn out, but I decided to watch it simply because Miura Haruma was in it. So far, the risk is paying off. I watched the first three episodes in one go and now I cannot wait until the next. It turns out that this drama is the one I’m anticipating the most. Miura Haruma is so effing cute as the unmanly high school student and then he turns into a hot samurai. He is really believable as both characters. He completely transforms himself for the role of a samurai, which probably has something to do with his experience in his first stage play. No matter who he is playing at the moment, the laughs never stop coming. I really love the interactions between the samurai Miura and Miura’s love interest. It really shows the egotism of men back in the day but at the same time it’s really cute. Shirota Yu’s character is such a wuss and dork, but I can see a lot of growth for him over the season. There is so much more that I can say, but I’ll stop here. It’s pretty clear how I feel by now: I would really recommend this drama.

You probably saw this already, but I'll leave you with it anyway:
