Dengue Fever - Venus on Earth

Release date: January 22, 2008
Download: Tiger Phone Card, Seeing Hands

My first time though, I enjoyed the listen, but I kept waiting for something really intense to happen. By the time the album stopped, I thought to myself “That was it?”

Clearly as my first ever experience with this group directly influenced by 60s and 70s Cambodian pop (which was in turn influenced by American pop), I just wasn't sure what to expect.

But every time I listen to this six-member, LA based group, I have a good time. The lyrics jump back between Khmer and English, and Chhom Nimol has a voice that is joy to the ears.

Bottom Line: If you liked Vampire Weekend and want a little more pop to start off the summer, try this out.

Overall: 3/5
