OMG what a great meme. I am no good at names or artists. so, my list will appear considerably shorter, but in reality is much longer.

we'll open with the obvious

"Strange Fruit," Billie Holiday

and

"Love for Sale," Ella Fitzgerald

I also love her versions of "I Got it Bad and That Ain't Good" and "Bewitched, Bothered, and Bewildered."

lessee...

"The Methadone Blues," Firewater

anything sad by The Pogues

"Another Lonely Day," Ben Harper

"Long Black Veil," Joan Biaz

"My Father," Judy Collins

"Circle Game," Joni Mitchell

"Don't Talk About Me When I'm Gone," Billie Holiday

"Devil Woman," by I have no IDEA

"I've Been a Coal Man All My Life," Appalachian Folk

"Slow Train to Georgia," no idea

"Look Down That Lonesome Road," Doc Watson

(god forgive me) "X Amount of Words," Blue October

"Can't Help Loving That Man of Mine," Ella or Billie

"I Love You Porgy," same

and so on...well, that was a fun way to avoid work. Thanks for posting! Glad for all the Bob Dylan on your list. He fucking rocks me, and I love all his sad songs too...I just figured it'd be redundant to list them all...

Wow! Nice contributions! You know, I know that we share some musical tastes and that's one thing we never got around to discussing at ALL when you were visting. Next time. Devil Woman- think that's by Cliff Richards. I love that song!! You got the MP3? PLEASE send it to me. Bobby Dylan- gotta love that man. What a masterpiece that guy is. I'm almost ashamed to admit this, but the first time I heard the Blood On the Tracks album, I sat and listen the whole way through without moving and fucking cried my face off. Close to home I guess. Honestly, I could have made an entire list with just sad Dylan tunes. A couple I forgot that are so great and sad- "Mama You Been On My Mind" and "Seven Curses". Good stuff. Indeed (that was for azilla). Strange Fruit- how in the HELL did I miss that one? Jeez. Billie's is definitive for sure, but if you haven't heard Nina Simone or Cassandra Wilson's versions, check em out. You know Cassandra Wilson? Think you'd dig her.
