Dark Knight (Part 2)

HAI EVERYONE. Cee-cee's back again haha xD and -gasp- with another part of "Dark Knight!" :O

His cell phone kept on ringing incessantly, most likely texts from Sunye, but Lee Donghae paid his phone no mind as he lay on his bed, deeply immersed in his own thoughts and the events that had unfolded a half hour ago. He hadn’t even understood half of what had just happened. All that would register in his mind was her…how, little by little, her normally cheerful and angelic face fell as she realized what was happening, how she tried to keep herself together until she came dangerously close to breaking down, how she had cast him one tear-filled and heartbroken look before running straight out of the building and how all the while, his own heart felt as if it was splintering, slowly cracking in half as he simply stood there rooted, watching her run off-

The constant ringing of his phone finally managed to break through his deep trance of thinking and, quite irritated now by the constant playing of the ring tone, got up and grabbed his phone, uttering a rather harsh “Yubasaeyo?”

Donghae was then taken aback and slightly surprised when the person on the other end wasn’t Sunye but a distressed-sounding Leeteuk. He could barely understand what his hyung was saying as he clearly sounded like he was freaking out. “Whoa…Teukie! Slow down, I don’t know what you’re saying! What’s wrong?!” Donghae said loudly into the phone in an attempt to calm Leeteuk down.

“Donghae! Are you with my sister right now?!” Leeteuk practically shouted on the other end. Yoona… The unspoken name cut through the air, sharp as a knife and left his heart thumping erratically. Donghae was silent for a few moments then muttered, “No…I’m at home right now. Why?” “She’s not at home- she never came home and I can’t find her! I’ve been trying to call her cell phone for the past ten minutes and she isn’t picking up! I’ve contacted all of her friends and she’s not with any of them…before I left school, she told me she was staying after because she was looking for you…I assumed she was with you and called you…”

Suddenly, Donghae felt his heart stop beating for a few seconds and his mind go fuzzy and then completely blank. What…? He whipped his head and checked the time on the clock on the wall. 7:54 pm…it’s been almost a half hour since I left school…she didn’t run back home?! Where could she be?!? The shock and sudden fear and worry that settled in him made him simply sit dumbly by the side of his bed in total silence.

It was a while before Leeteuk finally broke the silence on the other end. “Hae…Hae, I know what happened. Heechul told me- he saw the whole thing. You care about her so much, don’t you…? Please, Donghae…help me find her. She’s my only family and I love and care about her- so I want her to find her happiness. She loves you as much as you love her. I know you think she doesn’t want to see you and will push you away after what happened…but it’s not the case. I want both of you to find your happiness together. And it’s raining and dark outside…who knows what could happen to her?”

At this, Donghae snapped out of it and adrenaline started to course through him. “…I’ll go look for her,” he told Leeteuk as he stood and searched around for his jacket. “You’re right…I can’t just leave her alone like that. Anyway…I have to hang up now- my phone’s battery is dying. Yeah…Yeah…Yeah okay… I’ll call you later…” After bidding his hyung goodbye, he found his jacket, put it on and ran to the door, where he slipped his sneakers on and dashed out, slamming the door behind him.

As he ran around to different neighborhoods, he kept on recalling what had happened right before he had left school:

It was starting to get late into the evening and extra study class sessions in school had just ended. Donghae was exhausted from listening to lectures all day and planned to go straight home- until he was reminded of something he had originally planned to do. He had to find her- he had wanted to talk to her for a while. Ever since they were childhood playmates along with her brother, Donghae had always felt a warm, tingling feeling whenever he was with her. His heartbeat always sped up when he saw her smile and whenever she cried, all he wanted to do was to dry her tears and hold her tight. Only recently, he realized they could only had been only one thing: feelings of pure love. He wanted her- he needed her. Every time he saw her, he became plagued with sudden desires to lightly brush her face with his fingers and kiss her senseless.

He headed for the dance room in the school- Donghae remembered that she had dance club practice today and hoped that it hadn’t ended early. He was about to turn the corner into another hallway when he heard someone call him. “Donghae!” He turned around and to his surprise he saw a panting Sunye run up to him. “Sunye? You RAN here?” he said, teasing her a bit- Sunye almost did anything she could to get out of participating in physical education activities. She ignored his comment and looked him in the eye. “Donghae…I’ve always really liked you,” she said softly, gazing at him. “Would you go out with me?”

Donghae stood there, stunned, and stared at Sunye. Here was one of the most popular and pretty girls in school, who had run after him and was telling him that she liked him? AND wanted to go out with him? Inside, he was a mess of confused feelings. Like any normal boy in the school, he had lusted slightly after Sunye and thought it would be nice to go out with her. But…it wasn’t the same. It wasn’t the same as how he felt about…Yoona.

Nevertheless, even though he had made up his mind, his mouth was out of coordination with his brain, he stuttered on, “Um…well…that’d…I wouldn’t… mind it…really wouldn’t mind it at all…bu-…” Just then he heard a shuffling noise nearby and he turned to the direction of the sound. When he realized who had been standing nearby and watching the whole scene unfold, Donghae felt his heart plummet into his stomach, the acid corroding it away.

Yoona was by the intersection of the two hallways, simply standing there, rooted, with a frozen look on her face. She had left dance club practice early and met up with her brother and told him to head on home without her- she had wanted to find Donghae to talk to him. She had seen Donghae and Sunye talking and hid herself to eavesdrop. Now, all she could do was stand there dumbly. Both of them stared at her and Sunye especially seemed quite annoyed as if she had just intruded on something.

She desperately tried to give an “I’m happy for you” smile to Donghae, but found that just then, her smile muscles decided not to work. In vain, she tried to tell him “Congratulations” but found that her throat when dry and no words would come out. She didn’t even realize the tears had begun to fall until they had trailed their way down her face and dripped down to the collar of her school uniform. Her mind now begging her leg muscles to work, she stood there for a moment longer, silently crying and then once her muscles finally began to respond to her, she cast him a look mixed with betrayal, hurt, grief and sadness and ran off.

All this time, Donghae’s senses had gone numb. He couldn’t feel anything, couldn’t register anything. He didn’t hear Sunye cheerily tell him to call her that night to plan their first date, acting as if nothing had happened. He didn’t feel Sunye clasping his hands or leaning into him to steal a tight embrace. All he knew that his heart was slowly breaking, piece by piece and his brain was screaming at him to run after Yoona but he still only stood there and felt that he couldn’t. He just simply couldn’t…

Donghae still winced at the memory and had been so wrapped up in thinking about it, he hadn’t exactly been paying attention to where he was going and accidentally knocked into a girl and she fell over. Donghae immediately stopped and went back to help her and kept apologizing- until he realized who it was. He stopped in mid-sentence and stared in shock at the girl. “Sunye?!”

Hahaha cliffhanger! xD So what did you think? :D
