Chapter 5

Sungmin rushed into the waiting room of the twelfth floor in the building that was his father’s workplace, his mind a whirlwind of confused thoughts. He nodded curtly to the receptionist who buzzed him into the office immediately. As Sungmin entered, he wondered what on earth his father would want to discuss with him so urgently.

Lee Gyongsi was a man of absolute precision. When he saw his son enter his spacious office, he gave a small acknowledgement of his presence, then gestured him to take a seat, closing the door behind him with a click and extra pull to make sure the door fully closed.

“Thank you for coming at such short notice. I’m confident that you had no problems with your scheduled activities for today…?”

“Yeah, yeah, it’s fine, Dad.”

Sungmin sighed inwardly. His father was always like this- cold, calculating and direct. He realized that he was not alone in the office. His mother, a near complete polar opposite of his father, was sitting in another chair behind his father’s desk, giving her son a small, strained smile. Four people were sitting in chairs facing in front of the desk.

When Sungmin sat down, he glanced over and saw an older couple he did not recognize, but a man he vaguely recognized and a girl he definitely knew. It was Sunny, her parents and her uncle, Lee Sooman, the dean of SME. Lee Sooman nodded to him in recognition, but Sunny refused to look at him. Sungmin had talked to Sunny before…but, granted, he didn’t really know her. What he DID know was that she had an uncomfortable, almost guilty expression on her face.

His father cleared his throat and said, “Sungmin, you know I am aware of your relationship with the Choi’s eldest daughter?” Sungmin shot his mother an uneasy glance and answered, “Yes…”

“Well, I personally feel that it is a wise decision as it would greatly benefit the family corporation. Any connection with the Chois is a good thing. However, Lee Sooman, the dean of your university, along with his brother here…have offered us an interesting proposal. One that I feel would benefit us the most in the long run.”

“Wait a minute, what are you saying, Dad?” Sungmin said, heart pounding and a bitter taste of anxiety in his mouth.

“They have suggested an intermarriage between our companies to merge the separate Lee companies as one. In other words, a marriage between you and Sooman’s niece, Sunkyu.” There was another silence and Sungmin couldn’t even find words to express his emotions. Mostly though, it was shock and anger at his father for arranging something underhandedly without even bothering to consult him again.

At the same time, everything was starting to make sense: his mother and Sunny’s expressions, Jongwoon-hyung’s warning on the first day of school (“Sungmin…just keep your ears open for any news from your father.”) How could he NOT have seen this coming before? Despite his feelings, he knew better than to interrupt his father when he was explaining something, so Sungmin did his best to keep a cool face and kept quiet.

“I still advise you to keep in close relation with the Chois, but sooner or later, you will have to abide by the arrangements that have been made. I’m quite sure Choi Minwoo will find someone competent in his eyes to be a suitable husband for his daughter. Also, starting next week, the two of you must attend weekly appointments to help prepare for the merging and to start business training.”

Lee Sooman smiled a bit and added, “It will help you two get to know each other a bit more, which will be beneficial in the long run- should our companies merge together, we may eventually achieve success parallel to the Kims and the Chois. The university and entertainment affiliation will rise as well- your offspring generations down will be well off.”

Sunny’s father grunted and spoke up for the first time: “Sooman, this all seems well planned out but when will this all occur by? Our group still receives rather generous funding from Minwoo; should we merge together, the Chois will see no more reason to support us any longer. Could we really be successful without them?”

Sungmin’s father replied, “We’ll discuss that issue on a later date. In the meantime, you two should probably get back to campus. Hyuna, there were a few calls about the contract from the small company you handled business with last month. You should take the car along with them and go back to the house.” Sungmin’s mother nodded in agreement and escorted her son and Sunny out of the office.

Lee Hyuna made a quick stop at the bathroom and while she was gone, the two looked anywhere but the other in awkward silence. Sunny spoke first: “Sungmin-sunbaenim…I…I’m sorry. I didn’t ask for this either, I didn’t even know about it until this morning- my uncle was really adamant about this and…”

Sungmin sighed, trying to hide his annoyance and resentment of the situation as best as he could. It really wasn’t her fault after all. “Look, it’s fine, Sunkyu-ssi. I should have known my father would do something as underhanded as this. I would talk him out of it if I could, but it looks like his mind is made up. Damn it, how am I going to tell Sooyoung…”

Sunny felt her heart constrict as Sungmin checked his phone. When her father and uncle broke the news to her this morning, she could not deny that part of her felt excitement and joy at the arrangements. Most of her, however, felt an incredible guilt, both for Sungmin and for her dongsaeng Sooyoung. The two were so happy together and here she was, pulling them apart. Sunny felt like a monster, even though it technically wasn’t her fault.

The awkward silence continued throughout the car ride back to campus. When Sunny was dropped off at her dorm and the driver turned the other direction to get to Sungmin’s dorm, Sungmin burst out into a rampage and ranted to his mother:

“How could Dad do this to me again?! Every other thought he has is for the company this, and whatnot for the company that- he never thinks to ask about how I feel or how we could possibly compromise!”

“Sungmin…yes, I agree your father may be disagreeable at times, but honestly, it is for the good of our family. And as much as we both want you to be happy, you do have to think of the family company as one of your priorities.” When she saw her son’s expression of hopelessness and disappointment, she said comfortingly, “I’m sorry, Sungmin, there was just no arguing with him. I myself thought it was much too sudden- but your father always has a plan, so I’m sure he’s just thinking for the good of our family. And besides, Sunkyu seems like a very nice girl.” Sungmin only pouted, stared out the window and muttered, “She’s not like Sooyoung…”

The driver dropped Sungmin off by his dorm and his mother called out, “Take care of yourself Sungminnie dear- tell Joohyun I said hello!” Sungmin made a small wave to his mother, then trudged back to the dorm, wondering what he was going to do now.

It was so calm and peaceful, since nobody could disturb them. Seohyun had already went with Yuri, Yoona and Sooyoung-unnie to lunch and brought a box of sushi for Kyuhyun, who had eaten it ravenously. They were both perched on a low hanging branch of a large tree Kyuhyun had discovered in his freshmen year, and ever since had become his sanctuary where he could retreat to in peace. It was in a place near the back of a building hardly any students went to, so neither of them were mobbed with fans.

Right then, Seohyun was sitting primly on Kyuhyun’s lap, and his head was buried in her neck.

“Seohyun…”

“Yes, Kyu?”

“You smell good.”

Seohyun’s heart skipped a beat and she smiled, her face turning a rose-colored shade. Unbeknownst to her, while Kyuhyun inhaled her scent, guilt washed over him. Why am I doing this? He asked himself. She’s so innocent…I’ve…I’ve got to tell her…come clean…there will be less consequences then…

“Seohyun.”

“Yes?” Kyuhyun turned around to face her and the words were just at the tip of his tongue…but he had made the mistake of staring into those wide, beautiful eyes and he faltered.

“I…I…” he stammered. In any case, he never got to say what he had wanted to say as something caught her eye and she said, “Hey, who’s Calculus textbook is that?” Kyuhyun mentally cursed himself as she hopped down from the tree and went to investigate.

When Seohyun opened the textbook, a cascade of loose leaf notebook paper tumbled out. As she observed them, she wondered, “What a messy scrawl this person has. I wonder who this belongs to?” Seohyun looked at the inside of the front cover and read aloud, “Lee Seungri, YGE University.”

Suddenly, Seohyun recalled the young man with the rusty, unique voice who was Dara’s half brother. “Ah, Kyuhyun-oppa!”

“Yes, Seohyun?”

“I have to deliver this book to someone on YGE campus…I’ll be back in time for the seminar…”

“Wait, to who?”

“Uh…” For some reason, Seohyun didn’t want to say who it was really for. She didn’t know why but instinctively, she lied, “…Sandara! Remember her, Kyu? She goes to YG- she was probably here for some conference or whatever and left her Calc book here!” Confused, Kyuhyun said, “Okay…just don’t be late…I’ll have no one I love to talk to.” Seohyun giggled and Kyuhyun’s heart pounded even harder.

I’m…really a disgusting person…

As Seohyun had discovered on her first day, the distance between SME and YGE campuses were quite short- so short that Seohyun had arrived within five minutes. Surprisingly, it didn’t take much time to find someone who knew Seungri (in fact, he was part of a college band on campus- and apparently, rather popular with the girls) and to point out where his dorm was. Seohyun managed to find it with no trouble at all and, taking a deep breath, knocked on the door.

Strangely, the door was not locked and swung right open. Startled, Seohyun took a tiny step into the messy dorm and called out, “Hello? Excuse me…is Seungri-ssi here? I…I have his textbook. Hello?” Heavy rock music seemed to be streaming from a room. Seohyun, heart pounding, knocked lightly on this door, which also was unlocked and swung right open.

Seohyun was met with a boy with toned six-pack abdominals currently changing into a shirt. Totally caught off guard, she let out a gasp of shock and the person poked their head through and Seohyun’s eyes bugged out when she realized it was Seungri with the nice chest who had been changing.

Seungri’s eyes, if it was even possible, bugged out even more than hers and let out a yelp of surprise. Both of them stumbled back as far away from the other as they could.

“What are you doing here? Is barging randomly into people’s rooms a habit of yours as well as being clumsy?” Despite how startled he was, Seohyun marveled once again at how calm his voice sounded. At his comment, Seohyun turned bright pink and said indignantly, “Well, excuse me for trying to give you back your Calculus textbook!”

“Hey- where’d you find that?”

“On campus. A thank you would have been nice, since you probably have some sort of exam soon and your notes aren’t really…”

“Yah, Seungri you pabo, you forgot to lock the front door again!” A new voice burst through the dorm and Seohyun could hear the movement of a few people coming through the dorm. Just then, four other men popped their heads in through the door, coming in just in time to witness the end of that awkward episode.

One of them who had a rather large nose said, “Um…are we disturbing something here?”

A man with a rather flashy jacket and a fedora tucked on his head commented, “Ah! Who is this pretty little lady and what the hell is she doing with you, Seungri?” Chuckling at his own wit and sarcasm, he approached a confused Seohyun and asked, “Do you require something from us? And tell me miss, did our maknae do anything unforgivable to you?”

“No, hyung, nothing happened,” Seungri grumbled, his face turning bright red. “She’s the one who came in out of nowhere!” Seohyun, a bit lost, said timidly, “Yes…Seungri-ssi is right…I was just here to return…his textbook…” The man gave her a smile that made her blush a bit and remarked, “There you have it! She even came all the way here to give you back the textbook you’re not responsible enough to keep track of. Dear, why don’t you stay for a while, I think we’ve still got food.”

“Ah- thank you for the offer but I’d best be going, I’ll be late for class. Thank you anyway…um…?”

“Oh! Silly me, I never introduced  us! That there is Choi Seunghyun, or T.O.P., a rapper like me and pretty damn cool when ya know him. That’s Dong Youngbae, aka Taeyang. Probably the only guy who ever remembers that we need to survive on food. There’s Kang Daesung, swell guy with an awesome voice. I assume you know Lee Seungri, and I am Kwon Jilong- just call me GD. Together we are Big Bang!”

Seohyun bowed to them and the other men greeted her respectfully. “Yah, Seungri! You should accompany her back. We wouldn’t want our little miss lost would we?” Seohyun was about to decline and say it was alright when Seungri heaved a sigh, muttered “All right, all right,” and signaled for an even more confused Seohyun to follow him out.

On the walk back to the bus stop Seohyun insisted, “Seungri-ssi, I’m fine, I know the way back, really…”

“Thank you.”

“Eh?”

“Um…I, uh, never properly thanked you for finding my Calculus book…so…thanks. I would probably end up failing the test tomorrow if you hadn’t found it.” Seungri, embarrassed, looked away, his cheeks turning a rose color and Seohyun smiled widely and said,

“Ah, it’s no problem…you did seem to be struggling with deriving polynomials though. The way you’re doing it is much too complicated, there’s a really simple way to do it.” Stunned, Seungri simply stared at Seohyun for a moment before laughing and said, “You…you’re…you’re such a nerd. Geez, don’t you have a social life?” Seohyun, a little insulted, insisted that it wasn’t the case, but his laughter was infectious and soon enough, she was giggling along with him.

They waited together for the bus and when it picked her up three minutes later, Seohyun smiled at him and waved from the window and Seungri found himself grinning and waving back. Two minutes, the bus had already left and he still couldn’t keep that goofy grin off his face.

What…what the hell is this? Remembering her smile, his heart started to pound harder but Seungri shook it off and blamed it on the wind as he walked back to his dorm.
