Chapter 2

Conversations became hushed and murmurs and mutters spread throughout the various crowds as everyone had their eyes on one thing- the elaborately ornate Rolls-Royce that pulled up by the curb. A middle-aged driver, clad in a suit and gloves stepped out to open the door, letting a pair of slender legs step out to reveal a lovely slim figure, blindingly white teeth, sparkling eyes hidden behind a pair of shades and a shimmer of long blond hair.

Rapid-fire talk began to spread amongst the watching crowd as Jessica Jung walked on, seemingly oblivious and indifferent to the wave of attention she was attracting. Not far behind came a man at least a head taller than her, walking with just as equal grace and lithe. He had let his hair grow out in the summer and it bounced lightly in the air as Kim Heechul easily caught up to Jessica.

“Yah, Ice Princess,” he teased her. “You seem to love these showy entrances.” Jessica, barely even paying him any attention, said, “Who gave who a ride to campus today?” Heechul simply pouted and whined, “It’s not my fault I’m still on probation.” The blonde-headed girl smirked and responded, “Well, maybe you should have thought of that before having a booze party with Kangin shirtless in the car when your parents were home.” Heechul chuckled.

After walking in silence, throngs of people still casting glances at them, he said, “So…gonna miss me in classes this year while I’m partying it up in graduate school?” “Oh please,” Jessica snorted with amusement. “I’d miss my few adolescent pimples more.” Heechul shot back, “You are one mean, cold-hearted little bitch. I don’t even know why I’m your best guy friend sometimes.”

Jessica tossed her hair back a bit and replied sarcastically, “’Cause you know you love me. And ‘cause we know way too much about each other to not stick together.” Jessica Jung may have had a sharp tongue, but what she said was true. She and Heechul had known each other since they were born, mainly because of the strong business ties between the Jungs and the Kims. Either way, they had spent a good many years in each other’s company, merciless teasing coming from both ends- but you couldn’t find a stronger sense of kinship between a boy and a girl in anyone else.

“Are you still going to continue with that amusing game of yours?” Heechul inquired. When she didn’t respond, he went on, “Come on, Sica. It’s getting old. It’s not worth making such a big deal over it and I’m quite sure a lot of people hate your guts right now. I thought you had more cool than that.” Jessica angled her head at him and shot him one of her iciest glares and even Heechul felt himself shiver from

“Besides…I have a good feeling about this year. This’ll be my debut year- I’m sure of it.” Heechul sighed- she could be so confident, so sure of herself that it was unnerving to hear. Outwardly, he only shrugged and said, “Whatever you say. Though you technically are pretty much all set to debut. The only question at the moment is when they’ll ever find the last member to complete the girls’ group you’re in now.” At this point, Jessica tuned him out and simply looked on ahead where her dorm stood fifty feet ahead.

She was in her junior year, and after a year of meticulous waiting for word from the board about the last pending member that was to join the group, she was more than ready to debut. A small, uncomfortable thought nagged at her- rumors and stories of trainees that waited all their college years, past graduate school without ever hearing from the board. Jessica shook it off and told herself firmly: It will happen this year.

A loud horn distracted her from her thoughts and she turned to see that her cousins had arrived. She looked past a way overexcited Sungmin at the building he had come out of. A small smile formed on her pink lips as she took off her sunglasses. I wonder if he still remembers…

At SM, qualified freshmen that passed an audition underwent a trainee year in which they took vigorous classes to hone their true entertainment skills. Then, after freshmen trainee, there were many paths that they could take. People unsure of their true potential went on with normal classes, waiting to hear from the board if there were open spots for them. These people most likely ended up being the tech geeks or potential MCs. True-blood actors went straight to a certain school located on the far right side part on campus. But the real glory, the real fame and status, was becoming big in the music industry.

There were other prestigious and respectable universities that had very successful music groups, such as YGE and JYP. But there was no other university that had more successful groups than SME. The revenue, popularity and media attention both the college and the music groups received were staggering. To make it big in SME was a dream every student longed for- but only certain people can achieve that dream.

Seohyun was a few hurried steps away from being closer to that dream than ever, checking one last time that this was indeed the administrative building. Even so, when she stepped into the building, she was engulfed in a confusing maze of doors and hallways. The place was massive and Seohyun had no idea how she was going to find the dean at this rate.

“Can I help you?” came a high, somewhat sing-songy voice. Seohyun turned to find that the person that addressed her was a rather short girl with wavy hair and a smile so bright that Seohyun couldn’t help but smile back at her. “Yes, uh, could you please tell me where I could find the dean?” “Sure! Here, follow me , I need to send him a message anyway,” the girl chirped and Seohyun, relieved, followed her down a few hallways.

The girl Seohyun found to be unusually energetic  with a bubbly personality and frank open-mindedness. “So…what’re you here to see the dean for?” she asked. Seohyun replied, “I’m transferring here- I was supposed to have an appointment with him…but I got lost finding the campus. I just came back from New York so…” “That’s so cool!” she excitedly interrupted her. “What’s it like there? Sica- I mean, one of my unnies, tells me about America all the time- but she was in California! Is it like, super dangerous there? Do a lot of New York kids skip school and graffiti buildings? What’s their accent like?” Seohyun, a bit startled from the rapid-fire questions said, “Um…it was alright…and their accents were quite interesting.”

She and the girl giggled a bit until they found that they had reached the dean’s office. “Well here you are,” said the girl. Then, she smacked her forehead and said, “Oh gosh, where are my manners? I’m Lee Sunkyu, but please, call me Sunny.” She offered her hand and Seohyun took it, admiring the firm grasp and said, “I’m Seo Joohyun…but…call me Seohyun.” “Seohyun? That’s a lovely name. Well, I’ll see you around.” Seohyun smiled back at her new friend as she stepped into the dean’s office.

Coming back from the administrative office after picking up his schedule, he stifled a belch. He really shouldn’t have eaten that much kimchi for lunch- the guys were planning to pool their money together and eat out at that really good restaurant across the street from the co-op later today. But he had been dying from hunger again since it’s not like he has a lot of money in the first place.

As he walked toward his dorm, he saw a huge, showy and seemingly brand new Lexus by the curb and Sungmin rushing towards the car to envelope Sooyoung in a giant embrace while Siwon laughed as he helped his porter with the luggage.

Then, a girl staring at the dorm standing not too far away caught his attention. Shit. He swore in his mind. Thank God she didn’t notice him right then. What the hell was with her?! Immediately, he turned around and headed in a random direction- to him, anywhere would be better than where she was.

She really needs to stop stalking me for an answer.

“I’m so terribly sorry I’m late,” Seohyun blurted out when she stepped into the office.“Oh, no worries- you’ve never been here before so I understand. Please, take a seat, Miss Seo,” the dean told her warmly and Seohyun sat down gracefully in a chair in front of the dean’s desk. The office was spacious and well-furnished but she had little time to observe her surroundings before the dean said, “Welcome to SM Entertainment University, Seo Joohyun. I am Lee Sooman, the dean of this college. As you may know already, we hold much prestige in not only in South Korea but internationally as well.”

As the dean went on and on about the various activities the university offered, Seohyun let her mind wander off to thinking about the possibilities that lay ahead of her…and eventually on her best friend. She wondered where he was at the moment, if he was doing okay, if he was having fun wherever he was…and if he still thought of her, even after all this time.

“Now, I understand that when you were in the U.S. last year,” said the dean, snapping Seohyun back to reality. “You attended a special class where you received the highest honor recommendation credits which were transferred here. Am I correct?” Seohyun nodded and the dean continued on: “To the best of my knowledge, you also successfully passed the audition that was offered when you came back to the country, thus making you exempt from the required trainee year students at this university must undertake.” The dean smiled at her and said, “Miss Seo, I’m bringing you good news saying that you are now officially a student at SME and have also been added to the now completed all-girl music group Girls’ Generation.”

Seohyun stared at him in shock and the dean chuckled. “Ah…thank you so much, Lee Sooman-ssi!” she managed to stutter out. “One last thing we need to take care of- would you prefer to keep your real name on campus or would you  like to be referred to by a stage name?” Without any hesitation, Seohyun answered, “Yes…Seohyun…would be nice.”

The dean nodded at her and then pressed a button on what seemed to be an intercom. “Could Sunkyu come into my office please?” he spoke into. A few minutes later, Sunny came into the room. “Seohyun…I believe you’ve met my niece, Sunkyu…or, er, Sunny. She’s part of Girls’ Generation as well, and will be living in the same dorm with you and seven other girls. She’ll show you around campus. ” With that, Seohyun bid the dean goodbye and followed Sunny out the door.

Sunny showed her around, telling her what all the buildings were and where to get the best deals for food all while chatting with Seohyun. She began to feel excitement fluttering in her stomach as the older girl told her stories about their dorm and the other girls living there.

When they reached the dorm, Sunny opened the door and Seohyun stepped in to find seven attractive girls hanging around in a lovely lounge. “We have our maknae!” Sunny said cheerfully and the other girls excitedly greeted Seohyun from where they were. Sunny then began to introduce them to Seohyun.

First, she gestured to a girl with long mahogany-colored hair and round doll eyes and an air that .“This is Kim Taeyeon-unnie. She’s going to be our leader- she’s an amazing singer but such a dork at times.” Sunny giggled and ducked a smack from the somewhat-violent leader.

“That choding over there is Im Yoona. She’s heiress to the very substantial Im corporation but she’s so good at dancing!” Sunny turned her attention to a slim girl, not much older than Seohyun who was texting but looked up to give the maknae a brilliant smile and said, “Hi!” Sunny stood on her toes to lean into Seohyun’s ear and said, “She’s busy texting her boyfriend.”

A girl just about Seohyun’s height with long wavy black hair came over and greeted them. “This is Kwon Yuri. Her cousin is Jilong from YG, believe it or not.” Not knowing what Sunny was talking about, Seohyun simply smiled at Yuri who in turn gave her a friendly grin back.

Another girl with brown-black hair came over and Sunny introduced her. “This is Kim Hyoyeon, aka Dancing Queen- she’s really good.” Hyoyeon blushed and denied it, greeting Seohyun at the same time.

The door opened again and in walked a girl with short, pixie-style hair whom Seohyun immediately recognized. “Ah! Perfect timing- Seohyun, I’m sure you’ve heard of Choi Sooyoung, daughter of the ultra-rich Chois.” Seohyun said she did and greeted the tall unnie.

A girl with medium length wavy brown hair and pouty lips passed by and greeted them casually. “That’s Tiffany Hwang- she grew up in America and her dad’s quite the business tycoon.”

Sunny searched a bit before finding the last member reclining in a beanbag reading a book. “Seohyun, this is Jessica Jung, daughter of the prestigious Jungs.” A blonde-headed girl looked up from her book and somehow, she and Seohyun locked eyes on each other. Seohyun had to admit, she had been caught off guard by the girl’s beauty and she could only imagine how many guys longed for her.

Jessica gave Seohyun a small smile and greeted her and Seohyun smiled back and bowed.

Taeyeon suddenly shouted, “Who’s ready for the big dinner meet-up tonight!” The girls burst into cheers and Tiffany said excitedly, “Omo, I can’t wait! Ah, I haven’t seen the guys in so long- can’t wait to see Kangin, Siwon, Heechul and Kyuhyun-…”

“Eh?” Seohyun interrupted. “You know Kyuhyun?” “Of course!” said Tiffany. “He’s part of Super Junior- our guy counterparts.” “Huh? Super Junior?”

Taeyeon said sympathetically, “Lay off, you guys, she’s new here. Yeah, Kyuhyun’s part of Super Junior. The most successful band on campus.”
