CAFÉ HAUS Chapter 3

Tonight Inoo, Daiki and Chinen are closing the shop. After cleaning up, Chinen asks Inoo, “Are you done? I’m done.”

“Oh, I just need to prepare some stuffs for tomorrow’s order then I’ll go. But you can go ahead, Chinen.”

“Thank you then I’ll be leaving first. Otsukare!”

Inoo checks his list again for tomorrow’s cake order then walks to the storage to get the ingredients. He almost drops his clipboard when he sees someone in the storage.

“Gosh! You scared me! I thought you went home already!”

Daiki bows. “I’m sorry. I am off tomorrow, so I thought I should check the supplies first and makes note for Yuya tomorrow.”

Inoo gets what he needs and walks back to the kitchen, leaving Daiki in the storage. He tries not to be alone with Daiki, hoping Daiki will leave before him. After setting down a bag of flour on the counter, the shop phone rings. Inoo’s eyebrows furrow, who calls at this hour?

“Moshi moshi, this is Café Haus. I am sorry but we are closed for today.”

“Ah, sorry to call at this hour. My name is Akechi, and I think my son received a call from you guys about our cake order change?”

“Ah, Akechi-san, yes, I was the one who called. You ordered a strawberry rhubarb cake for your wedding anniversary tomorrow, and we received the rhubarb from our supplier, but I think they are not good. I called earlier to suggest a change to strawberry cream cheese cake. It will have the same tanginess, I am sure you won’t be disappointed. And since I couldn’t get hold of you before, your son agreed to switch the order to strawberry cream cheese cake for tomorrow.”

“Dame desu yo, Inoo-san. I understand that you said the rhubarb you have are not good, but can you use it anyway? It has to be strawberry rhubarb cake. Because that’s the cake I made for my husband on our first wedding anniversary and he loves it so much. If it’s changed to another cake, then there is no meaning to it on our 40th anniversary.”

Inoo bows, “I apologized for my rudeness, Akechi-san. I didn’t know your reason and switched it without my knowledge.”

“Ah, no, it’s not your fault. I am sorry I couldn’t speak to you when you called. My son decided for me because he didn’t know either. If it’s possible, can I still get strawberry rhubarb cake for tomorrow?”

Inoo gulps. “Yes, Ma’am. I will make you the best strawberry rhubarb cake for your wedding anniversary tomorrow. I’m sure it won’t be as good as the cake you baked tho.”

“Don’t be so modest, Inoo-san. Your cake is my favorite, so I’m sure your cake tomorrow will be delicious as well. Thank you for listening to my request.”

After hanging up, Inoo rushes to the storage to re-check the rhubarb case that they received this morning. As a patissier he should follow the customer’s request, but because he’s been so busy, Inoo decided to take his chance and asked for an order change. And now he realized that he ignored the customer’s feeling when they ordered the cake.

“Aaah… this is not good…” Inoo closes the box of rhubarb and storms back out.

Daiki cranes his neck from the back isle, “Inoo-chan, what’s the matter?”

Back in the kitchen, Inoo makes phone calls to suppliers to ask for a fresh and good quality of rhubarb. Eventhough rhubarb is in season, however the demand of it only makes it possible to buy a case through special order.

“Do you have a spare stock that I can pick up now or early tomorrow morning? I can pay right now with my card,” Inoo asks. “Ah? The earliest supply will arrive tomorrow afternoon huh? Thank you, no.. yeah, I need it right away, but thank you so much.”

Inoo calls some other suppliers who are still open at this hour. All of them don’t have the stock until tomorrow afternoon. Inoo needs it very early in the morning to make the cake.

“So you need to buy some rhubarb for tomorrow?”

Inoo flinches and turns around. He forgot that Daiki is still there. He nods, “Yeah, we can’t change the order and rhubarb that we have is not good, it will ruin the whole cake. Even if I order a new case, the earliest it will arrive is tomorrow after 10AM, and it will be too late.”

“Have you tried vegetables market?” Daiki asks.

“No, but they don’t take orders by phone, we have to go there to get it ourselves.”

Daiki smiles, “Then what are you waiting for?”

“Eh?” Inoo just looks at Daiki as the barista reaches for the keys hanging on the wall.

“Let’s go and find some rhubarb. You want the perfect ones for your cake, right?”

With Inoo browsing his phone for market location and rhubarb hunting, Daiki drives the store van through the empty streets. It’s already midnight and the closest vegetables and fruit market from the shop is about 45 minutes away.

“I’m sorry you have to come with me,” Inoo murmurs.

“I invited myself,” Daiki chuckles. “I am off tomorrow, so no worries.”

The big vegetable market they come to doesn’t allow visitor at this hour and they can’t buy unless they are registered and buy at least 10 cases. Daiki pulls Inoo back to the car.

“Let’s try a smaller market. There should be some place who has them.”

“I’m sure some supermarket has them, but most of them are closed now. Fine, let’s go to a smaller market. Maybe they will let us in this time.”

“Where is the closest one?”

Inoo taps on his phone. “This one, it’s 20 minutes from here. If we can’t get it there, then let’s go to a 24 hour supermarket.”

The smaller market is not as busy as the wholesale one. Inoo talks to the administrator who asked the vendor about Inoo’s request. Because it’s smaller, most sellers won’t be coming until 3AM.

“Do you want to wait until 3AM? I don’t mind,” Daiki looks at Inoo.

Inoo contemplates a bit. “Hmmm… let’s hit the 24 hour supermarket first, then we can come back here at 3.”

Daiki suggest that they go to the big 24 hour supermarket for the chance of having stock of rhubarb. Inoo decided to call them first.

“So you have them?! OMG Thanks! Yes, please, could you set it a side a case for us? We’ll come now!” Inoo looks happy. “Dai-chan, they have it!”

Daiki smiles. “Let’s go get it then.”

As they drive there, Inoo mumbles, “I should have called every 24 supermarket first before I let you drive out for more tan an hour. I’m so sorry… I wasn’t thinking…”

“It’s okay. The more important thing is you will get it now. Ah, I hope the supermarket has some hot coffee.”

“Ah, I’ll buy you one! Please let me treat you!”

Daiki laughs. “Okay, you owe me a cup of latte then.”

When they arrive at the supermarket, Inoo goes to meet the person in charge to pick up the case while Daiki goes to the café section. Inoo meets him again, with a case of rhubarb in his hand.

“I got it, Dai-chan!!”

“Yokatta ne,” Daiki smiles.

Inoo pouts when he looks at Daiki’s latte in his hand. “I said I would treat you.”

“It’s okay, Inoo-chan. I can take a rain check. So are we heading back to the shop now? Are you going home after dropping off the rhubarb?”

Inoo shakes his head. “I’ll stay at the shop. I will start working for preparation and the cake around 4 o’clock. I’ll sleep on the sofa in Yama-chan’s office, he doesn’t mind.”

They arrive back in the shop just five minutes after 2 o’clock. Daiki is hanging the van key back on its hook when he notices Inoo is swaying back after putting  down the rhubarb case on the table.

“Whoaa… Are you okay?”

Inoo is surprised that Daiki caught his fall in his arms. He steadies back on his feet and steps away, “Ah, sorry… I just remember that the last meal I had was lunch, and it was only a sandwich.”

“What? You should have said something, we could eat at the 24 hours supermarket!”

“Sorry, I was too busy thinking about the order. It’s okay, I’ll make some sandwich now.”

Daiki grabs Inoo’s arm. “No. Just sit down, I’ll cook you something.”

“Eh? No, you already helped me so much, Dai-chan, please just go home and rest.”

Daiki pushes Inoo on to a chair to sit down. “No, you are the one who needs some rest. I am off tomorrow… err, I mean today, so don’t worry about me. Take a short nap while I’m cooking.”

Inoo sighs. As now the problem is solved, his body realized that it needs food and water. Inoo grabs a bottle of water and drinks it while Daiki uses the kitchen counter. Inoo is watching Daiki’s back, belatedly realized that he just spent so many hours alone with the man he tried so hard to avoid.

Why is Daiki so kind to him? Then Inoo flinches. The one who is not kind is himself. He treats Daiki like a stranger, an enemy, eventhough they spent an intimate night together. Daiki always smiled and treated him kindly. Even now…

Why is it so hard to hate you?

“Inoo-chan…”

“Huh…”

“It’s ready. Please eat then you can go to sleep in the office.”

Inoo rubs his sleepy eyes. On the counter there is a plate with omurice on it, plus some veggies on the side. “Whoaa… omurice!”

“Sorry, I can’t cook many things, but I’m confident about my omurice. Please try it! I made you some hot tea too.”

Inoo scoops a spoonful. He closes his eyes and a smile breaks on his lips. “Huwaaah… yummy… so warm and delicious. I feel revived. Thank you, Dai-chan.”

After eating, Inoo sipping his tea while Daiki washes the plate. Inoo looks at Daiki’s back again, “Are you leaving now?”

Daiki shakes his head. “I will wait here until the first train runs.”

“You should just take the van home and let Takaki drives it back tomorrow. I’ll talk to Yama-chan.”

“I feel bad using the van for personal reason.”

“Seriously? You helped me out today, so don’t feel bad.”

Daiki insists, “I will wait. It’s okay, I will sleep on the chair.”

Inoo stands up, “Fine. Then let’s sleep in Yama-chan’s office.”

Daiki chuckles, “It almost sounds like you are inviting me to sleep together.”

Inoo’s face turns red, “You know that’s not what I mean!!”

Daiki holds up his hands, “I know, I know, I’m just teasing you. Gomen,”

Inoo walks in fast pace to the office and opens the door. “You can take the sofa!”

Daiki sits on the chair then puts his feet up on the table. “I’m fine here. You should take the sofa because you will work hard…” Daiki glances at the clock on the wall. “… in two hours.” Daiki pulls out his phone and taps the screen. “I’ll wake you up. I want to catch the first train anyway.”

Inoo sighs then sits on the sofa. He doesn’t want to argue anymore and he can’t deny that Daiki is right. He is tired yet he has a busy day ahead. If he can catch some sleep, it will help a lot. Daiki already closed his eyes when Inoo lies down and makes himself comfortable. He glances at Daiki for a moment. It occurs to him that he doesn’t mind that Daiki is here. With that thought, Inoo closes his eyes.

The next thing Inoo knows is when he flinches upon hearing loud beeping. He opens his eyes right away and glances around. This is not his bedroom. He sits up and realizes that he slept in Yamada’s office. He cringes as the beeping continues, then realizes that it comes from Daiki’s phone. Inoo walks to pick up the phone on the table to turn it off.

How can Daiki still sleep while his own phone is beeping so loudly?!

“Oi, wake up. You want to catch the first train, right? Dai-chan…” Inoo shakes Daiki’s shoulder. He belatedly noticed that he just touched Daiki. Inoo gasps, Daiki’s head is thrown back and his Adam’s apple is so obvious. Inoo remembers how he kissed and licked that sexy Adam’s Apple. How Daiki moans as he nipped and made love bites on his smooth neck… how he wants to taste it again…

Dammit! This is not the time to remember those things!

“DAI-CHAN, WAKE UP!!”

“Eh? Uhh… what…” Daiki opens his eyes, confused. “Eh, Inoo-chan…”

“I can’t believe how you didn’t wake up while your phone beeped so loudly like that,” Inoo grumbles.

Daiki grins and yawns, “Gomen… I’m not good with waking up hehehe…”

Inoo rolls his eyes, “I know that now. You should get going now if you want to catch the first train.”

Daiki gets up and stretches. “Thanks for waking me up, Inoo-chan. Good luck with your cake.”

“Take care,” Inoo nods and watches Daiki drag his feet out of the room. Inoo lets out a long breath. He needs to clear his head. That feelings inflicted by getting too close to Daiki should never happen again. Inoo tells himself to stay away from Daiki, because he is not sure he can control himself the next time.

*  *  *

Some things are easier said than done.

Since the night Daiki helped Inoo, the other becomes more friendlier than ever to Inoo. Perhaps Daiki thought Inoo had warmed up to him, and Inoo dislikes it. He still tries his best to avoid Daiki without being too obvious. The only problem is Inoo can’t deny that he also becomes comfortable around Daiki. He can ask him for help anytime, and Daiki sometimes makes him tea without him asking.

Today Inoo came to the shop a little late. He is rushing to the back and without knocking he opens the door to the locker room. Inoo gasps when he walks in and sees someone is changing his clothes.

“Ah… sumimasen… I forgot to knock…”

“Oh it’s okay,” Daiki hangs his T-shirt inside his locker and then puts on his uniform.

Inoo opens his locker and puts his bag inside. He is hesitating on taking of his clothes while Daiki is here, but he knows he is late already and he needs to prepare his work as soon as possible before Yamada notices. He takes off his jacket slowly and hangs it. Daiki is fixing his apron in front of the mirror. Inoo reluctantly unbuttons his shirt one by one, hoping Daiki will get out of there before he undresses.

But then Daiki sits down to take off his shoes. Unlike the rest of them who wear working shoes from home, Daiki wears his fancy sneakers to work and changes them before he starts working. Inoo is getting anxious but he has no choice but to change with Daiki there.

He takes off his shirt and quickly hangs it. He grabs his chef uniform and puts it on in the same pace. He mumbles, “Is Yama-chan here yet? I hope he won’t notice that I’m late.” Inoo is making an excuse for his hurried moves.

“I haven’t seen him yet,” Daiki looks up to see Inoo.

Inoo regrets that he talked to Daiki because that moment he is taking off his jeans and Daiki turns to him at the exact same moment. Inoo can feel his face getting hot, but he grabs his uniform pants and puts them on in a hurry. He slides his feet back into his shoes and grabs the apron and chef hat before he slams his locker door close. “Gomen, I’m going first. It’s late already,” Inoo murmurs as he walks out.

Inoo finds refugee in the storage room. He puts on his apron and hat carefully while trying to calm himself down. What’s up with today? First, he was late, then the first thing he met at work was Daiki. Half-naked Daiki, to be exact. The image of Daiki’s toned chest and chiseled abs brings back the memory of their night together. Inoo still remembers how he ran his palms across Daiki’s stomach, kissing and sucking his tiny nipples and making him groan in pleasure.

Arrrrgghhh…. This is not what he is supposed to think at work!

Inoo slaps both of his cheeks twice and then walks out of the storage. He needs to focus on his work and forget about the man he slept with for just one night.

After a busy long day, Daiki pokes his head through the kitchen door, “Excuse me, where is Chinen?”

Inoo looks up, “I think he is taking out the trash.”

Daiki puts a cup on the side counter. “If you see him, please tell him this is his frappuccino. Inoo-chan, do you want some tea?”

“Huh? Oh, no, thank you. I’ll be leaving after I put these away,” Inoo picks up several pans and baking utensils.

“Let me help you,” Daiki grabs some from Inoo’s hand and then follows him to the cabinet.

Inoo doesn’t say anything when he puts things away. Daiki stands near him, helping him. Inoo murmurs, “Thanks.”

“Strawberry,”

Inoo turns to Daiki, confused, “What?”

Daiki grins at Inoo, “You smells like strawberry today.”

Inoo turns away, “I can’t help it, I made so many strawberry cupcakes for a birthday event today.” He closes the cabinet and walks away. “Thanks for your help, Dai-chan. I need to go now. I’ll leave you to lock up.”

Inoo leaves the shop in a hurry. Daiki also goes to the same station as him so he doesn’t want to walk together with Daiki. Not today. After seeing Daiki half naked, and be seen half naked by him too, Inoo needs to get away from Daiki. He is irritated how Daiki still messes up his mind and emotion, although they don’t do anything in particular. It’s too bitter to admit that seeing Daiki’s chest again has sparked the desire in him.

Inoo pulls out his phone and presses on the speed dial, “Moshi moshi, Yuto? Have you eaten yet? I’m coming home now, do you want me to buy you something on my way? Oh, okay. Then how about some beer and snacks? Yes, okay, I’ll stop by at the conbini on my way home. See you soon.”

Inoo puts his phone back in his pocket. He has a boyfriend whom he loves and who loves him. He doesn’t need Arioka Daiki.

A/N:
Again, there is no smut in this chapter. I hope you don't get bored with my smutless fic ahahaha Next chapter will have some smut delish ^_^
If I have time tomorrow, I will post a new chapter of School FIc.
I've been reading my most fave Yaoi manga, Haru wo Daiteita by Youka NItta, because it was the first yaoi manga I liked (the first yaoi manga I read was Saint Seiya doujinshi) and I read it raw a long time ago. I hope I can write stories like that, very strong bond, loveydovey, angsty and hot, all packed beautifully. Besides FML, I haven't written happy smutty InooAri again. I hope I can make a new story like that, but nothing can beat FML. I don't know if I can write like that again. -aiko-
