I finished Moby Dick last night. I think I'm not smart enough to read it. I didn't dislike it. I actually enjoyed reading it, I'm glad I did, but I don't think I really got it, and I certainly wouldn't name it THE great American novel as it sometimes is called. I also wouldn't even really summerize it as 'about mad Captain Ahab and his obsession with the white whale'. That took up a quater of it. The other 3/4 was about the art and craft of mid nineteenth century whaling. And probably because I don't know enough about sailing, a good chunk of the 'action' was hard to follow.
But maybe I just missed the point? Kelli I really wish I could have a discussion and get your thoughts.
So now I am going to raid the schools library. They have books for up to 'grade 8'. Not sure why. I guess at some point they might get kids that old and good at English, but I doubt it. Right now the oldest kids (11 I think) have only been speaking English for about a year or less so are nowhere near good enough to read them. I should probably say some of the books they have, Jane Eyre, Sherlock Holmes, A Christmas Carol, 10,000 Leagues under the Sea. They don't that many of those type of books (maybe a dozen) but still. My next choice is Tom Sawyer. That was on my short list of books I wanted to read at home (somewhere after Pride and Prejudgice and Zombies).
