As for your question about backstory -- I think there's just enough. It's important to know why these things were valuable to you and I don't think it would have been as effective if you'd just listed the items. Knowing WHY is vital to the heart of the story.

In the writing, it seemed the telling of the story of the robbery seemed to take ages -- the bit about the bolting the door, and the biscuits, and the why I have two engagement rings... glad it doesn't read that way.
