History/Personality/Plans/etc.
Character History: [wiki]Kanji Tatsumi was born in the small town of Inaba, Japan, on January 19th, 1996. His parents owned and operated a textile store in the town's shopping district, and from them Kanji inherited a love of fabrics and sewing which would lead to future torment and mockery by his peers at school. Even Kanji's father seemed to think his hobbies were too effeminate. Shortly before he died, Kanji's father told him to "be a real man". Kanji was insulted by those words at the time, since he believed the message to be a criticism, and they haunted him for years to come.

After his father's death, both Kanji's personality and appearance changed. He focused on making himself as masculine as possible and pushed back any habits or desires which might be considered even remotely girly. He became notorious for getting into fights when he was in middle school and was well-acquainted with the local police by the time he got into high school.

Kanji's name became associated with gang activity when he started beating up the town's biker gangs because the noise they made disturbed his mother's sleep. Nearly everyone mistakenly believed he was a member of one of these gangs, and he was even featured on a news special about them. Following the broadcast, a young detective named Naoto Shirogane approached Kanji to ask him a few questions, which Kanji misinterpreted as flirting. Nevertheless, Kanji agreed to spend the afternoon with the boy... only to have their conversation interrupted by some stalkers from school that Kanji promptly chased off with threats of violence.

His fifteen minutes of fame on TV led to his being targeted by the serial killer behind the mysterious murders occurring in Inaba at the time. Kanji was kidnapped and thrown into the TV world, where he was confronted by his Shadow. With all of his repressed insecurities broadcast on the Midnight Channel, he refused to accept the part of him that was sensitive, effeminate, and homosexual. Because he denied it, the Shadow turned on him and attacked. If not for the intervention of Souji Seta and the rest of the investigation team, Kanji would have been killed. When the battle was over, Kanji finally understood that he had to face that part of himself. He accepted the Shadow in his heart, and from it his Persona was born.

After his rescue, Kanji expressed interest in joining his senpai in their quest to hunt down the serial killer. He was welcomed into the investigation team and throughout the rest of the year aided in several rescue missions.
Point in Canon: November 6, 2011Nanako was kidnapped by Taro Namatame, and the Investigation Team has just ventured into the TV to locate the Heaven realm that Nanako's subconscious has presumably created. Kanji is pulled from before the confrontation with Namatame and the battle with Kunino-sagiri. Kanji's social link with Souji is at Rank 7, after he made a collection of toys for the neighborhood children and Nanako asked him to teach her to sew.
Character Personality:Outwardly, Kanji appears to be a typical teenage hooligan: loud, abrasive, hot-tempered, violent, and not all that bright. He doesn't take much time to consider his behavior, used to solving all of his problems with his fists, and tends to respond with a knee-jerk reaction based on gut feeling. He never has a plan, only leaps into action. He does poorly in school, if he bothers to attend at all, because he doesn't have patience for making mistakes and being corrected. He'll snap back to criticism as if it's a personal attack, immediately on the defensive. He greets most people with a rude attitude, pushing them away from the get-go so that he doesn't have to worry about their approval. He has a hard time behaving himself even in the best of times.

All of this, however, is Kanji's desperate attempt to conceal his softer side. He's afraid of being unwanted and unloved, deeply hurt by rejection and criticism in the past. The truth is that he's very sensitive, that the hard exterior is protecting a kind and gentle heart. When someone manages to break through his shell, they'll find a genuine, warm, and self-sacrificing young man capable of experiencing deep empathy and expressing sincere generosity.

Of course Kanji's rough nature isn't a facade altogether; he only has more specific targets for his aggression than might be immediately apparent. He can't stand bullies or anyone who threatens or harms someone innocent, and he won't put up with intolerance in his presence, even if it isn't directed at him. He rushes to the aid of the helpless. And when he happens to be the aggressor, if he suspects he's hurt someone that didn't deserve it then he'll apologize and do his best to reassure them and make them feel better. He's well-meaning in a clumsy way and doesn't actually want to be hated. In fact, he yearns to be close to others.

Although he is slow to befriend, once he's formed an attachment to someone, he is endlessly loyal to them. A bond created with Kanji is a bond for life. He dedicates himself to his comrades almost to the point of submission and servitude. Even his manner of addressing his friends changes to become suddenly polite and deferential. He doesn't take his relationships for granted, appreciating his friends and being there to encourage them through anything. And not only is he nurturing, but he can be a coach at times, pushing others to get through tough times, give it their all, and never give up.

His most guarded secrets, however, are his more "effeminate" traits. Kanji is very artistic and especially loves sewing. It's a hobby for which he's been mocked throughout his life, something he does only in private now. He can be found gazing into the home economics classroom at school, clearly yearning to sit down and create beautiful things with everyone else, but he denies himself the pleasure out of fear. And that isn't the only thing he denies. Over time, Kanji has come to realize that he "vastly" prefers men. This questioning of his sexuality has been deeply buried. To be gay, he believes, is to be unmanly. So he represses all of his homosexual urges, deadens himself to all emotional attachment, and overcompensates by acting in ways he believes to be supremely masculine. It's painful for him, because in reality he wants to be accepted for who he is, and he is an affectionate boy who desires to be loved. He continues to struggle with his sexuality even after accepting his Shadow. He wants to be a "real man", and he isn't sure that's possible if he gives in to his heart's desires.

Kanji lives his life according to a strict set of rules stemming from his vision of the ideal man. As rebellious as he looks to the outside world, he's not a chaotic force but someone who follows his own moral code almost religiously. He isn't terribly logical or intelligent, however, so his own rules are frequently in contradiction. Essentially, he does what sounds good (in a heroic sense) at the time, often accompanied by a muttered phrase like, "Man's gotta do what a man's gotta do." In fact, he utters many metaphors without considering their deeper or true meaning. He's given to non sequiturs when he tries to sound wiser than he is.

He may not be intellectual, but he does have intuition and emotional insight. When his own defense isn't an issue, he can actually be very soothing and comforting to be around. Because of his own complicated issues, he's surprisingly tolerant and respectful when it comes to the emotional turmoil of others. He can tell when people are honestly upset even when they try to conceal it, and although he isn't the greatest counselor, he gets to the bottom of it and tries to solve the problem. He likes helping people, being there to rescue or defend them. Especially when it comes to the people he loves, like his mother or his friends. Most of the fights he engages in are for someone else's sake, even though authorities are convinced he's the bully. He doesn't try to correct his image, either, because he tells himself he doesn't care what people think of him. He likes being there to support others, but he doesn't want to admit he needs support in return.

Given his true compassionate nature, Kanji doesn't actually enjoy fighting. He doesn't ever start a fight. Not intentionally, at least. Every fight he's in is provoked by something else. He doesn't shy away, of course, but he isn't domineering and seeking to frighten everyone into submission. He's only determined to protect himself and others from threats. When it comes to tracking down the serial killer and rescuing victims, Kanji faces the task with determination and enthusiasm. But he otherwise doesn't want to cause pain. He wants to be a positive force in the world.
Character Plans:Remembering his previous experiences in the Port, Kanji reconnect with a few old friends and likely move back into the apartment he shared with Souji. Knowing also that he was murdered over his Newcomer status, he'll become more active in the Newcomer community and work to prevent any future attacks. In his time back home, he's also become more comfortable with others knowing about his creative hobbies, so he may seek a career in fashion or toy design.

First Person Sample[This kid looks drunk. Drugged? On drugs? Something like that. He's holding an icepack to his face, which doesn't make him look any prettier. Most new arrivals look like they've been through hell and back, but this punk looks like he stopped and lived there a while. He's glowering at the camera.]

Damn. Uh. So...

So I get, like, all this shit about another world and whatever. But I mean, what am I s'posed to do, y'know? Got my ass kicked. Got my stuff taken. Ain't seen nobody from home hangin' around these apartments or anything. So... What? Do I just hang around here 'til somebody shows?

[A flinch and he leans his head into that icepack with a little more pressure.]

Goddamn, this place's got the worst fuckin' welcome committee.
Third Person SampleIt's a surprise attack. At least, that's what he thought at first. It made sense, right? They were just in that secret laboratory. Souji was leading them down the stairs to the next level, and then BAM! The whole world went upside down and away. How long he was out of it, he couldn't guess, but when he came to, he was ready to keep fighting.

Only there weren't Shadows in this place. As he climbed to his feet, it was people that came running at him. Not kidnapped people, either, but people who acted like they were in charge. He was too distracted by the swaying of the world to really hear what they were saying at first, but he could tell: this was their territory and he was on it. He propped himself up with the stone slab that served as his weapon these days, focused more on the sickness and the weird tugging he could feel by his heart than anything they had to say. In a second, he'd listen. They'd have to wait until he was good and ready. "Yo, yo just back off," he growled, hunched over and probably looking downright feral to them.

Well that was when one of them tried to take his weapon. Tried to pry it right out from under his arm. "I SAID BACK OFF!" Kanji roared, this time picking himself up to his full height of six feet. That came off a little stronger than he intended. A little too scary. The scientists backed off, but a pair of meaner-looking dudes stepped forward.

--Hell, they may not have been Shadows, but this whole thing seemed related to the lab somehow. And once threatened, Kanji wasn't about to roll over. "Alright, punks. You're askin' for--"

Something bit the back of his neck. He stopped and glanced back. Some lady in a lab coat had gotten him with a syringe. Kind of funny, he thought. She was tiny. Pretty brave. And that was the last thought he had before the tranquilizer kicked in... Strong stuff.
