BACKGROUND: Mutants run in the family. When a Sohma child is born, a seer goes to see the baby and predicts if the child will become a mutant or not. Oddly enough, there are only ever 13 mutants at one time. Only 12 out of the 13 are thought to be special or important, and they are more loved. The 13th is the outcast. Kyou is that outcast.
When Kyou was young, his mother committed suicide by walking in front of a train because of her son’s outcast status. His father always blamed him for his mother’s death and therefore they were never really close. People in his family have generally treated him badly. The Sohma family is large and well off, having a whole compound that most of the family lives in. Kyou, on the other hand, lived outside of the compound in a cozy house owned by his cousin Shigure along with Yuki and Tohru.
His primary mutation appeared when he was rather young. One day when he was stressed out he turned into a cat. The rest of the family wasn’t surprised, they knew he was a mutant from birth. Kyou wasn’t that happy, of all the stupid things he could possible do, he turns into a cat. He doesn’t know when his secondary mutation manifested, just that the bracelet on his wrist keeps it in check. He only found out about it when his Shishou removed it. (It actually doesn't do anything, his family's superstition makes him believe that it does)
Kyou made a deal with Akito, the head of the house, that if he could beat Yuki before he graduates high school, then he won’t be locked up like all of the previous outcasts. Because of this, Kyou trains hard every day to beat Yuki. While at a karate competition he was asked to join the institute. At first he refused, but when his Shishou said that he might prove to be a good learning experience, he accepted the offer.
PERSONALITY: Kyou is very stubborn. He knows what he likes and what he does not; he doesn't like what he doesn't like and nothing it going to change it. He is hot headed and quick to anger and start a fight. Even though he could never beat Yuki, he is a strong fighter and has been training ever since he was a child, showing his dedication. He's also a bit sullen, he doesn't want to get close to people in fear something bad will happen to them. That fear isn’t irrational, when he was younger he became friends with Tohru’s mother and she died in front of him. He thinks he doesn't really deserve friends, but if you manage to get close to him he can be very sweet and protective, like a big brother figure. While he doesn’t want to get close with people, he seems to attract them.
APPEARANCE: He has nothing really worth mentioning besides his bright orange hair and reddish-brown eyes. He’s about 5 foot 8, and muscular. He always wears a red and white beaded bracelet around his wrist.
POWERS: Kyou has the super special power of turning into a cat. He also attracts cats, that may or not be another power. If Kyou gets particularly angry, his other form comes out (basically, this). And it smells really bad. Coming with that other form, but not only accessible while he's in it, is enhanced strength, but it's very minor.
