Well, it wasn't like Ikuto was going to complain. If they really were going to die tomorrow, at least he'd have the happy memory of holding her. Just the two of them--
"Ikuto, what is she doing here?"
His pleasant thoughts screeched to a painful halt as he became aware that his sister had arrived on the scene. Utau's mouth was already a dangerously thin line, and her eyes narrowed at the sight of the pink-haired girl fast asleep in Ikuto's lap.
"Yo," her brother greeted, as if he wasn't cradling someone who had just become the biggest threat to Utau's happiness.
Silence. And then--
"Ikuto, why??" Utau burst out petulantly. "You never do that with me! Why is Amu so important to you?? Why are you doing this when she's on the other side?! I don't understand!!"
Rather than answer immediately, Ikuto looked down at Amu. Even in the presence of one livid singer, she hadn't stirred at all. Instead she slept on, instinctively trusting him... just as she always had, always letting him do what he wanted to do, helping him when she could, always with that flush in her cheeks and an annoyed stammer. She really was just a silly kid, but then why...?
"Yeah," he said at last, not releasing her. "I don't really get it myself."
That was enough for him, but it didn't spare Amu from Utau's jealous wrath once she finally woke up, and it didn't spare him from Amu's indignant wrath once that had finished.
It was still worth it.
