It's been a quiet old time here. Oh well. I'm sure you've not missed it. Yesterday? No, what day is it? Two days ago, Monday, was Singles Day At HMV. Oh yessh. Last week's was a pretty unassuming affair. Mogwai's Mr Beast and maybe a single or maybe just the HMV Playlist CD, I can't swear to it. This week it was Gold Lion by Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Bell X1's Flame and The Fallout Trust with Washout.
The Fallout Trust and Bell X1 were both encoutered on this month's Playlist CD funnily enough. We'd heard of Bell X1 before and, funnily, we'd ruled them out as an option. They struck as pretty weak and a bit self satisfied for a band with so little gusto. Billed as one of the many new Radioheads they, well, weren't. However Reacharound, the track on the Playlist CD was great. The Fallout Trust's song on that CD was also one of the standouts so we thought, since they were both on sale on single, we'd look a bit further. Well.
The Fallout Trust's effort, Washout, plus its b-side, have done little for their cause except make my mind up not to bother looking any closer. Bell X1 however are still raising questions everywhere. After being so underwhelmed by the first album it will still take some considerable effort of talent and songwriting prowess to convert us to their cause but with both this single and especially Reacharound we've at least got our ears open, eh. The Chicken Lips remix of Flame wasn't amazing.
Gold Lion by Yeah Yeah Yeahs, however, while the best of the three singles, was probably only so by virtue of being a famiar package. We know what to expect and, unfortuantely, they delivery very little above and beyond the expected. Possibly a bit less. The song would make a decent album track but even then you probably wouldn't spend a huge amount of time on it. Here in single form it instead raises one or two questions about what we should be expecting from the album. Still. The album's out next week, so, there isn't long before those questions are put to bed. One way or the other.
