Not Quite Old

Me and Liars have fallen out. Their first album was an absolute joy and the singles that followed it were also fantastic. Admittedly Fins To Make Us More Fishlike was less warmly received here at Chez Unlixes than We No Longer Knew Who We Were but we liked them both, really. Then came There's Always Room On The Broom and that was a okay. A little turgid but they're an obtuse band so you kinda expect it. To be honest, though, by track six of They Were Wrong So We Drowned I was doubting I'd ever like Liars again. It's a shame. Clearly they've got a vision, they obviously know what they're doing it just means I've lost a band I loved. I'll still hunt them out when they release something but it's more for curiosity and out of blind optimism I do so now. I'm not a pop tart, I don't just go for catchy hooks, honest. I don't just go what is brand new brand new. I just. Didn't ever click with this new Liars. Today we purchased the The Other Side Of Mt. Heart (another great title, still) and, yep, as before, there were no palputations except maybe one of disappointment.

On the other hand, I'll tell you something that was brand new brand new, and that's Rhymefest's KanYe penned latest single. Who Rhymefest is I know not now nor expect ever to, this is just such a fine body of a tune it had to be purchased. You know me, I don't like 'em unless they're brand new brand new.

That said, simply being brand new is no excuse and therefore, Boy Kill Boy, I think you'll find the exits are over on the left, past the drinks machine. To be honest I'm sure Boy Kill Boy are okay. This is the second single of theirs I've bought but their whole sound seems such a sideswipe of better and, to be honest, equally as average bands it's just an entirely pointless endeavour. This month it was Boy Kill Boy play at being Editors writing dull poetry with Franz Ferdinand. Now I tell you what that ain't brand new.

And what else ain't brand new brand new is Mogwai's single. I bought it this week even though it was released last, if not the week before. I got it previously on 7" because I didn't know it was on CD. Hey, sometimes they get all cocky and release things on 7" only - ask Four Tet. As it happens, this time they didn't so I bought the CD single and got one extra b-side. 1% Of Monster was almost worth the extra outlay alone but Fresh Crown and Friend Of The Night are such good, return to form Mogwai tracks that they deserve the skip-free hi-fidelity of a brand new format. It's all very Godspeed, though, without the static and buzzsaw guitars. I'm hoping that the album itself, forthcoming apparently, is more of the same except with those feedback meltdown end of existence outros that I love Mogwai for. Now that really would be worth a brand new brand new look.
