Words Like Treacle
It's not lines like you couldn't stand to be corrected, even to this day specifically that make me love Calla. It's the fact that the wonderfully named Aurelio Valle can lace his hushed tones across them with such rhythm and poise. That's what a lot of my favourite bands have in common. Not the words themselves, but the sound of the words, the way they're said and sung. The Delgados are absolutely archetypal for it and Calla's last album, Televise, also did it with aplomb. Sure the melodies and subtleties of the songwriting is important to their sound but really what pushes Calla ahead is the way the lead singer melts his words across the landscapes created.
