Tonight I went to see Supersystem supported by Dartz!. I have a strange feeling (and my post-venue-still-mildly-intoxicated state definitely vouches for the "strange feeling"ness) that I wouldn't be a big fan of Dartz! on record, they seemed like an average band who played well. Rather than a good band who couldn't keep time, y'know?
Supersystem were great though. Annoyingly the ticker in The Empire said there'd be two support acts but despite the fact there was only one Supersystem weren't given any extra time. I bought their latest single which was handy cuz I quite wanted that. Even if I couldn't specifically afford it at this time of the month. Their actual set was a lot dirtier than their album gives them credit for, and included a lot more DFAesque digital effects. The only problem with it, I guess, was that pretty much nobody else there had heard of them and that they played such an amazingly short set. Small issues.
Their drummer, the guy whose introduction heralded the end of the band as El Guapo, was on Selling Merchandise duties. I tried to ask him why the band was so obsessed with quairbo lyricism but he said it would be better to ask the songwriter. From him all I could glean was the actually quite interesting fact that Born Into The World is in fact true - the songwriter was quite literally born into the world above a candy store and a flower store and his mother did indeed say to him to be a friend to every snake fly and tree. Or whatever the lyrics are.
I asked the keyboard/effects player if he believed the sea spoke a language we all knew but forgot when we woke from sleep. He said he had to, he sung it every night.
Fair enough.
