19th century portraits

A couple years ago, I got my hands on some super hi-rez photos of figures from the Civil War era. There's about 200 in the whole collection. I began drawing each figure in my graphic contrast style. Currently there's about 20 drawn figures. These portraits have found there way on a few different mediums including mahogany wood (5.25 x 5.25 x 0.75") (pyrography), wood trim (about 3.5" x 5.5") (image transfer), and now 24" x 24" board. See photos above. I painted four 24" x 24" paintings last week.

The 24" x 24" is a nice working size and makes a strong prescence when hanging on the wall. The graphic portrait style suggests screen printing, but they are hand painted with acrylic. Hand-painting give these portraits a warmer feel. The square format gives a nice sense of balance. The paintings will eventually find their way into custom black (or ebony) frames I will build.
