hard drive art

last night i was taking apart an old hard drive. The parts inside a hard drive are great:

1. case. nice sturdy size. about 5x7". interesting intended shapes which are quite techy without being too techy.

2. arm mechanism. kinda triangle-shaped. very sci-fi looking. like a robot that's going to grab your intestines and pull them out. i can't believe i just thought of that. that's gross.

3. platter. circular. super shiny. good for a portable mirror. kinda looks like a small cd, but shinier and thicker. did i mention it's shiny.

The plan right now is to paint civil war figures on the case and mount the case to some nice rich heavy wood like mahagony or bloodwood. The back side of the case is about 1/8" thick, so I might chisel out a section in the wood so the case is flush with the wood. I might head over to Owl Lumber in Lombard during lunch.
