Erika gets tubes in her ears

This morning Erika had a minor surgery to have tubes put in her ears. A small incision is made in the eardrum, and a tiny tube is put in to drain the fluid from behind the eardrum. Apparently it is a common way to treat recurrent ear infections. And, $deity knows, Erika has had a lot of them in her young life. She's been plagued by ear infections for the last 4 months, since she started day care. She's had 4 courses of antibiotics in those 4 months, and none of them cleared up the problem completely. So the doctor suggested the tubes. We'll see if that helps.

We took her to an outpatient surgery center at about 6:40 am, they gave her a sedative so she won't cry too much when they wheel her into the operating room; then they gave her general anesthesia in the form of gas, and 10 minutes later the surgery was over. In another 5 minutes she woke up, and then came the worst part -- she cried for about half an hour while the anesthetic was working its way out of her system. That was hard. I've never seen Erika so upset. It was weird. She was both sleepy and screamy at the same time. Her head flopped from side to side, but the rest of her body squirmed with satanic strength. :-) After about half an hour she started to fall asleep, and we took her home.

I just hope she won't need to take anitibiotics so often from now on.
