ten things lavi knows about kanda
lavi/kanda. 656w.

1. Kanda thinks it makes the job easier to stay a rough distance apart from the rest of the world. They've seen enough of love and desperate intentions. Kanda knows better; he's angry, focused. The name marking each empty grave becomes a collection of hard syllables that catch on his teeth. If he says he doesn't care enough times, it'll become true.

2. Kanda is an emotional fuck-up as much as Lavi is a hypocrite.

3. For a week, they shared a room in an old, cramped Parisian inn. After Kanda blew out the lamp, Lavi stared at the ceiling and asked, Hey, boss, what kind of stuff do you dream about? Kanda said, Shut up and get some rest. That mission, they lost every last one of their Finders, and each day Lavi watched Kanda turn like a spooked animal in bed.

4. Kanda likes cats better than dogs.

5. Kanda has a birthmark on his right shoulder. Lavi discovers it on accident as he's bleeding and dizzy from the gash in his chest. He breathes in between his teeth, breathes out in shallow gasps. Next to him, Kanda is covered in sweat and dirt, sinking some of his weight against Mugen so he won't fall. You still alive? he asks, and Lavi laughs and finds his hammer on the ground, flexes his fingers around it.

Once Kanda's own body begins to mend, he hoists Lavi up onto his back. Lavi coughs blood into Kanda's hair and Kanda tells him that if he's going to die, don't do it so loud. They walk forward, Kanda staggering from the extra weight on his sprained ankle. Lavi tries to stay awake, his eye focusing down the pale slope of Kanda's neck, bared under his torn uniform, and at first he mistakes the birthmark for another trophy of war.

6. Kanda's cabin fever kicks in within three days. After that, he needs the next assignment, a new punching bag. The goal is to keep moving forward. Keep moving on. Lavi knows the feeling.

7. Kanda reads--not nearly as much as Lavi does, but he reads, and as soon as Lavi learns of it, he harasses Kanda about starting a book club together until Kanda yanks Lavi's headband down over his good eye and pushes him towards the stairs. It doesn't come up again until a week later when they're watching akuma darken the sky. Lavi cracks his knuckles and recites from Dante, To get back up to the shining world from there, my guide and I went into that hidden tunnel.

Kanda answers before his first kill, low enough that Lavi almost misses it: We came forth, and once more saw the stars.

8. On missions, Lavi likes to chat with women who have full curves and quick eyes, or smile at the pretty girls who wear their hair down and shyly smile back. Kanda is apathetic at best, but once or twice he'll look back over his shoulder, as if seized--always by the same type of silhouette walking past, the same faceless, nameless memory.

9. After the few battles that end well, Kanda's blood runs hot for hours. The first time Lavi recognized all that leftover adrenaline, he offered to spar. The second time, he pushes Kanda against a private brick wall and crushes their mouths together. Kanda hisses Lavi's name and fists his scraped hands into Lavi's hair and clothes. Nothing about Kanda is gentle; his kisses are no different. He holds Mugen to Lavi's throat as Lavi jerks them off together under their uniforms, and Lavi swallows against the steel--sharp and strong like Kanda, but right now Kanda is silent and shaking and miles from being cold.

10. Kanda, as far as Lavi knows, has laughed three times: from the high of success and near-death, delirious with a fever that broke slower than usual, and that time Lavi fell into a lake.
