These weathered words which adorn the wall
Of a once hallowed edifice perhaps still hold
Some claim to glory for while they declare conquest
Of fleeting flesh so too did they defy the fires
Which consumed their author and swallowed his city.
His epic exploits recorded for everyone
To remember and revere may very well vanish
Some distant day though while this testament endures
His death is imperfect. A part of him is present
In the characters chiseled there captured in each carefully
Engraved groove. He may truly gloat
Now that he has lived for millennia lived in the minds
Of visitors to his temple reviving his victories there.
From the Latin, the inscription translates, “I fucked many girls here.”
It can be found scrawled on a wall inside the Lupanar, which is the most
famous brothel in what is now the ruined Roman city of Pompeii.
