How about 'Modern Practical Biathlon'?

While reading a friend's post that mentioned some serious off-roading, I was struck by inspiration.  I suggest the creation of a new "practical sport:", for which I propose the working title of 'Redneck Biathlon'.

Redneck Biathlon (or whatever we end up calling it) works like this:

You need a substantial area of wilderness.  Within this wilderness ( Read more... )

I'd just as soon not get that redneck. :) 'Redneck Biathlon' is just a working title until I (or someone else) comes up with a better name. 'Modern Practical Biathlon', perhaps.

It seems more like orienteering with guns. Biathlon is on a proscribed course.

Maybe "redneck orienteering"

-) How many people per team? (Some obstacles may be hard enough to necessitate spotters.)

-) Do all team members have to shoot? That is, could you get a team of three or four, with a dedicated driver and two shooters? Driver, navigator, shooter, spotter?

-) Do shooters have to dismount the vehicle? If the shooter has to have feet on the dirt, can he/she use the vehicle as a rest? (Turn the engine off, first!)

I'm sure I'll think of more... ;)

I was actually pondering team as well as individual competition myself. I do think shooters should have to exit the vehicle and go on foot to the firing point though, with a vehicle stop line not less than twenty-five nor more than, say, one hundred yards from the firing points (and not necessarily the same from one firing point to the next).

"Don't expose yourself or your team; vehicles are big targets." :)

Nice idea. I had no idea you meant vehicles when I read that initially. I think a more free form approach would be fun. One stage of shooting from a moving vehicle could be a good challenge. Set a minimum speed over rough ground.

For name: Yeah, "Modern Practical Biathlon" or "Modern (Summer) Biathlon" or even just "Modern Biathlon". Definitely not "redneck biathlon ( ... )

And, given the vehicle emphasis you've presented... what do you mean by "obstacles"? Just a synonym for "shooting stations"? or were you thinking they'd have to ford rivers and drive up steep hills and other similar vehicle obstacle course stuff?
Exactly. That's half the point.
