[The 29th of December is a day of mixed emotions for Texas.
One the hand, it's the day his family was saved by America. On the other, it's a confirmation of his inability to provide for them and his own inability to be a nation by his own right. So this is his day to reflect on all of that.
Plus there's the fact he's turned into a bird again, and he's stuck hopping around Hammerspace because he's locked out of his room. He's hating today more than usual. There's a trail of pecans, whole and broken, where he's been.
The Texas from the Civil War feel similarly- Except he's got the compounded emotion of knowing that he'll be forced to give everything up again and return to the Union someday soon. But at least he isn't a bird. He's opted to blow off some steam by trying out the gun Hookeracy gave him for Christmas, just doing some target practice with a tin can he found some distance from the cabin and Hammerspace. Cold be damned, he just needs a little space. It isn't hard to hear the gunfire though.]
