We stopped in Gary, IN last night, then on to Seymour. This truck is on its last leg. The air drier was clogged, so Freightliner bypassed it. Now there's a leak in the air compressor's seal, so engine oil is getting into the air system, and subsequently being sprayed all over the brake chambers, wheel wells, engine compartment and trailer header board. We lost 3 gallons of oil over the weekend.
On the bright side, I got my first paycheck, and I finally paid off Chase. Once I re-instate my account, I'll be able to start sending money home. Plus, I only have one more Monday on the trainer truck before I go solo, unless this truck breaks down before then...in which case I'll probably graduate early.
At least now I know what kinds of trucks I DON'T want. These Freightliners are, unfortunately, the best things Decker has right now. The lower-mileage trucks have fewer maintenance issues (this one is close to its 500,000 mile retirement line), and they have the most space out of the three types Decker uses. The International trucks have a fraction of the storage space, and the Volvos despite being the smoothest riding have less maintenance shops and mechanics (because it's German), and about half the storage space of a Freightliner. Really, the Century isn't a bad truck, but with as many problems as this truck has had since I got in it, I'm not too impressed. Hopefully the truck I get will be lower mileage so I'll be able to run more and stop less.
These maintenance issues aren't really affecting me financially, but they are affecting Keith. I'm still only making $300 a week until I get off this truck.
