I am literally waiting by the phone for a call from the judge. I got an email from one of his clerks - the one I didn't meet. She was nice enough to let me stay at her house (a gorgeous multi-bedroom apartment in lovely Toledo), so I left her a Guatemalan bracelet as a thank-you gift. She wrote to thank me for it, and said that everybody in the chambers liked me, and that the judge would be making decisions and calling this afternoon. BUT!!!! She said she doesn't know which way he'll go. It's no use being liked by his clerks if he was less than impressed, no matter how much influence they have on his decision. If he doesn't want me to work for him, that's one clerkship I'm just not going to get.
Meanwhile, I submitted my application to be the prison rights attorney in Alaska for the Alaska ACLU on Monday. Then all this week I've been submitting and sending out applications for organization that will be at the Equal Justice Works Job Fair. Most of the ones accepting applications from 3Ls are public defender offices.
I applied to public defenders in New York, New Hampshire, DC, Philadelphia, San Diego, Georgia, Kentucky, Louisiana, and TWO in Florida (THAT would be fun, even though their training programs are not exactly world-renowned). I probably applied to more public defenders than that, but I can't think of them right now. I also applied to other types of organizations in places like Ohio and California.
Hopefully I'll get something. I DO NOT want to be one of those public interest people who graduate law school without a job.
