This is perhaps one of the most different takes on Inuyasha that I've ever read. What makes it so different, so special, is not something easily named--perhaps it's the fairy tale quality of it that Kagome discovers when she first finds Sesshoumaru's story. But there's also tragedy and betrayal and an intense emotional pull that fairy tales lack. It's utterly captivating.

Resmiranda's Sesshoumaru is also a wonderful creation. He is a hard character to capture (especially when trying to write from his POV), but she pulls it off masterfully. Her Sesshoumaru is an exiled lord (and later, a traveling one) who has lost everything but can't relinquish his pride. Most people choose to portray Sesshoumaru when he's in top form, cool and arrogant. Other portrayals tend to be the exact opposite, where Sesshoumaru is somehow broken. This is a fascinating compromise.

We also get to see how Kagome is related to the fairy tale. This Kagome is no longer a girl, but a young woman who attends college and is attempting to get on with her life. This Kagome broke her leg while trying to get back to Sengoku Jidai. This Kagome is awesome. ^^ She's not some pretty anime ideal who gets everything she wants, but instead a real person who's been fucked over by fate.

Apparently, Kagome's destiny is entwined with Sesshoumaru's, because when she is allowed to go back to Sengoku Jidai she realizes that she is the miko of the stories. It's curious to see them interact with one another; in the beginning they're both so wary, but end up having a sort of working relationship. I'm actually hoping that they don't end up as a pairing because that would be kind of obvious.

And don't be confused by the timeline jumps. The present timeline is fairly linear, but it seems that the timeline in Sengoku Jidai jumps around.

I think what I was most impressed about was how the author wrote battle scenes. Okay, so there was really only one, but written battles don't hold much interest for me because they usually lack the fluidity that visuals create. Remisranda manages to have that imagery and yet it never feels gratuitous. It works.

Although the fic seems to be hiatus right now, I think the author is planning to start it up again sometime in the near future (think months). It will be worth the wait. ^^
