Links to amazing grass roots volunteer opportunties in Latin America

Oct 02, 2009 12:15

Before I left Australia, I obsessively learnt everything I could on Latin America. I googled constantly... I researched volunteer organizations for hours.. At first all i could find were companies making money of people volunteering..... not REAL grass roots organizations that were trying to make a difference and NEEDED volunteers. They were charging around 1000 - 3000 for 1 - 3 or 4 weeks.... and those people generally never really feel like they are making a real difference...

SO! After hours of searching (and by hours I mean hours upon hours over days and weeks) I eventually found the sites and compiled my own data base for amazing places to go.

I actually got to the first one on the list. The sea turtle conservation camp in Mexico. It was so remote I had to kayak 10 minutes down the river to get to the corner shop! and seriously... I saw usually around 2000 baby turtles a day, sometimes up to 6000. You would think once you've seen 35 000 baby turtles they would lose their shine a bit. Hellll No! Those little fuckers just kept getting cuter and cuter! Stupid cute!

OK, here is my list... I havent fixed it up yet, this is just how I had it compiled for my ease of use. I spent a longggggg time going through these websites, and it might be a bit messy. It is in order of countries from the northern tip of central america (technically bottom of north america) to the southern end of south america.

Here are the top 5 I think seem most interesting:

1 Amazing wild animal rehabilitation centre in Bolivia.

5 I have to say check out Playa las Tortugas, the link in Mexico - where I volunteered for a month... There was another i would have put up from ecoteer, but that link is broken now.... the website itself should still have a lot of awesome things. Hope this helps and inspires!
