Olivia, amazingly, hadn't even batted an eye at Jaina emerging from upstairs with Samantha. She just grabbed Sam's bag, that had been packed for ages and ushed them into the car, and drove them to the hospital ( Read more... )

Magazine? Huh? What?

Jaina's head darts upward, looking over at Olivia. She had been trying to meditate and calm down: the sight of seeing Sam like this, and knowning that someday that would be her in a situation similar was really getting to the Jedi.

"Magazine?"

"To read, dear." Olivia explains. "Or a cup of coffee? It could be the full hour, or it could be...now, we don't know. Birth is such a tricky thing--Sammy, dear, you okay?"

Sam waves her off, licking dry lips. "You know what sounds so yummy right now? Ice chips."

Yes! This is sarcasm!

Jaina blinks again and shakes her head slightly.

Really, all she wants right now is to tell Jag that those five kids are off. There's no kriffing way she's going through all of this.

"Um, coffee sounds good."

"Okay. Coffee. And ice chips." Olivia nods, turning around and running straight into the nurse. "Oh God, so sorry."

And she flees as the nurse smiles and comes in to check Sam's vitals, the baby's vitals. "Heart rates are up, you're doing good, Mrs. Largeman."

"Thanks." Sam mutters. She looks over at Jaina. "You're not going to pass out are you?"

"Pass out? Me? Hah!" But Jaina's face says completely otherwise. Her teeth clench together and she stands up, looking over Sam. "Jag wants me to go through this five times."

The nurse raises her eyebrows. "Five? Damn." She makes a mark on the chart she was looking at, then looks back at Sam. "Going to see how far along you are now."

Sam nods, head falling back on her pillows and making a face at Jaina.

"Nine...I'll go get the the doctor, it'll be time to start really soon." the nurse grins as she walks out.

"They weren't lying with their within the hour thing. Granted, we've been here forever." Sam growls.

Jaina glowers at the nurse before she works out. Stanging woman should learn to mind her own buisness.

"At least it'll all be over soon," she replies, giving Sam's shoulder a squeeze.

At least.

"Oh, Jaina." Olivia says, handing her a cup of coffee as she breezes in. "This is just the beginning."

Sam smiles tightly at her mother, faltering as a contraction hits again. They'd been going harder and harder since she came in...and that one was the hardest off them all. "Oof."

The doctor walks in, along with nurses and checks things again. "Okay. We're about to get ready to start, okay Samantha? When I say push, you bear down all your weight and push."

Sam nods, chewing on her lip, grabbing Jaina's hand, and her mother's, as Andrew's father 'ahems' and scoots out of the room.

Jaina really just doesn't know what to say right now. She's never seen anyone give birth before and the whole thing just looks painful and messy and is it really worth it just so she and Jag could have their own brats running around someday?

Maybe, possibly. But that may be Jaina squeezing Sam's hand harder than she intended right now, tense and nervous and unable to think anything but that it'll be her in this position one of these days.

How do people do this?

Sam squeezes her hand hard back. Maybe harder!

"Okay...three, two, one, push" The doctor says, and Sam bears down, pushing hard. She grits her teeth and hears her mom vaguely counting to ten, and then she's laying back down again.

"nnnngh."

It's quickly becoming a competition to see who has the strongest grasp. Because when the Doctor says push, Jaina squeezes her hand hard, gulping.

"Okay and...again." And Sam repeats the process, her mother counting, squeezing Jaina's hand to death.

And then she hears it, as she relaxes. The words: "There are the shoulders. Just one more push and you'll be done."

Ooh.

Jaina stands on her tiptoes, trying to see what the nurse is talkign about. But there's blood and it almost reminds Jaina of a battlefield.

This isn't right. This is... oh Force, five?

One more push and it's a hard one, 'cause Sam's ready for it all to be over.

And then, Olivia's gasping and grinning and there's wailing from the tiny child. The cord is cut and the baby is cleaned up and quickly handed to Samantha, who promptly? Bursts into tears.

This is the only thing that should happen after birthin' babies.

She can feel the tiny presence in the Force, coping with the new change around it and it's all sort of amazing. Jaina looks at Sam and the baby with a smile and once again imagines herself in Sam's position.

Except this time it's not so bad because she's holding a tiny dark haired child and Jag's beaming and Syal and her mother are there and everything's great.

Maybe it would be worth it?

Sometime later, they're situated in the postpartum ward, Olivia sitting in the bed next to Sam, Jaina standing beside them, all of their attention focused on the baby. "Hi Elliot," Sam mumurs.

The door opens and Andrew rushes in, looking disheveled and pissed and he starts spouting apologies but Olivia hops off the bed, tells him to hush.

He steps close, nodding at Jaina, kisses Sam's forehead and strokes the dark hair on the baby's head. "Wow."

Sam grins over at Jaina. "Ready for some of your own now?"
