Thomas Becket was murdered by four knights in 1170. The knights may have done it to please Henry II. Later Henry II did penance imposed by the Pope. Before being flogged by monks, Henry II wept with remorse over the words he uttered that led to his former friend's demise.

The film is based on the book Truman Capote wrote about a series of murders that happened in 1959. The rain is reflected on to the actor's face giving him tears.
