This doesn't really have anything to do with gasoline, though the word is in there. And there's a car. Right? Right?
-----------
Holy water has a smell. You try to explain it to Dean once as he drives down the road in the rain. Try to express the scent of its purity - so strong that you can almost taste the faith - in his limiting, human language.
Dean, of course, thinks it just smells like water, no different from stuff that comes out of the tap in the bathroom and falls in sheets from the sky. He's too distracted by the mundanities of the human world. He can’t smell it beyond the gasoline and gunpowder, the salt and sweat of your bodies.
You’re pretty sure you're currently experiencing what humans refer to as ‘disappointment.’ You want him to share your in your world the same way you’ve shared in his. To understand you the way you’re slowly coming to understand him. But again and again it proves to be too much for a human, even one as remarkable as he is.
He takes a swig from the flask you'd handed him, then passes it back before you can express your shock and disapproval at his mistreatment of something so precious.
"Tastes a little funny, though," he says with a hint of surprise.
"Funny?"
"Different." He smacks his lips, considering, but doesn’t elaborate.
You breathe in deeply again before carefully screwing the cap back on. "Like something more?"
He shrugs noncommittally, but you’re pleased, taking it as a victory. Smell and taste are closely related, and while it’s dim and dark compared to your perception, it’s something all the same.
There needs to be a soft drink whose slogan is "taste the faith". Just sayin'.
Agh, my brain just started making up SPN parody commercials. XD
Needless to say I love everything you write (... and eeeeeeespecially everything with Dean and/or Cas in it!), but since that is probably not an overall useful or interesting comment, I will instead note that this is totally a very human thing (emotion?) very well articulated - it's always disappointing when someone doesn't "get" something, so this seems totally perfect to me. :D
... ... Not to mention Dean & Cas.
... Yes.
.... I'mma just going to throw more <3s into your LJ now.
