So, we're well into November, almost out on the other side. I am busy, but not particularly unhappy about it. The other day I sent in an application for an exchange period in Québec for next fall. We'll see how that goes. No one else has applied for that particular spot, but there's just two or three places available, so it won't take many applications before there'll be competition. I don't want there to be competition. I want to go to Québec and make a fool of myself trying to communicate in Erasmus French with Québecois speakers.
I wanted to make a voice post the other day, but it seems that my skills at that haven't improved. I'm now completely sure that the problem is me, because this is a completely new laptop with a snazzy in-built microphone, and a snazzy headset, and STILL. I couldn't make either work without this weird background noise, I don't even know what it is. Is it feedback? Is it "I'm a microphone and I make this sound when I'm turned on" noise? What is it? What can I do?
Does anyone want a Christmas card? Let me know!
I started watching
Terra Nova was a disappointment, but we're only on episode seven, so things might still turn around. It looks a little bit like they've recycled a lot of the equipment from Stargate, which is not a problem, but... why do the good guys have to be lead by Reasonable White Guys with Guns, and the bad guys be lead by Unreasonable Black Woman who Wears Warpaint? Just... Please tell me there's more to this than that. Isn't sci-fi supposed to have broader horizons?
Lost Girl is fun! I'm all caught up on the show, and aside from having a massive crush on Kenzie, I really am interested in what's going on. The dialogue is snarky! Hooray for snarky dialogue! And they have their own little mythology and everything is just pure fun. Here might be a fandom I'd be interested in getting into. If anyone has come across any rec-worthy fic, let me know!
And, finally:
Old meme. Saw it on
soul_trapped_horror's journal, caught the bug.
You can learn a lot about someone by the music they listen to. Hit shuffle on your Pod or mp3 player Spotify and write down the first 20 songs. No cheating or skipping songs that are shameful. That is the fun! (I skipped repeated artists)
I included links to YouTube, so that the songs can actually be listened to if anyone felt interested. I sort of wish people would do that - because I'm the curious sort, and usually one doesn't recognize all the titles someone else might listen to.
1.
Black Betty - Ram Jam
2. Hyljätty nukke - PMMP. (This is apparently the only song ever to not have been put up on YouTube O.o Ah well, it's a children's song about dolls. Don't look at me like that! It's set to shuffle!)
3.
Guerilla Radio - Rage Against the Machine
4.
Put Out the Fire - Queen
5.
Stairway to Heaven cover by Rodrigo y Gabriela. (SO MUCH LOVE.)
6.
Hiuksissa hiekkaa - Maija Vilkkumaa
7.
Helvetinpyörä - Kotiteollisuus. (So, you can't find a classic children's song, but this is available. Just goes to show the internet isn't always right. Still. Kotiteollisuus may not be lyrical geniuses, but one should never underestimate the value of headbanging.)
8.
Draw Me - Sonata Arctica
9.
La Valse D'Amélie - Yann Tiersen
10.
Caught a Lite Sneeze - Tori Amos
11.
I'm Your Man - Leonard Cohen.
(En säregen blanding av zenbuddhist och sängkammarromantisk alfahane. Leonard. <3)
12.
In Bloom - Nirvana
13.
Veden ääri - CMX (Very fond of the band, not so fond of this particular song.)
14.
The Nobodies - Marilyn Manson
15.
Movin' on - Bad Company
(Yeah, yeah. Watch enough SPN, this is what happens. I always liked classic rock with close ties to blues, but I still haven't figured out what I think of all this country-based stuff kicking around in my music library.)
16.
Hit the Road Jack - Ray Charles. \o/
17.
Hell's Kitchen - Dream Theater (Incidentally! Has anyone listened to the new DT album that came out? It is magnificent! I hadn't managed to get into them after Octavarium, but this one is marvelous.)
18.
Flowers Grave - Tom Waits
19.
Love Her Madly - The Doors
20.
Viisaus ei asu meissä - Apulanta.
(I am glad this one came up! I suppose it doesn't sound too pretty when the lyrics sound like nonsense - but the song is a classic, man. Sister and me have done countless living room karaoke renditions. It's one of the songs we count as part of "our soundtrack".)
... if anyone made it this far, and happens to have been bored enough to actually listen to something, let me know if you liked anything. I did mention I'm the curious sort, right?
