Slipping silently out of bed, Circe kissed John softly before heading towards the library. She’d been spending quite a few of her nights there - ever since Ruby had come back from her recon mission with the news that there were only a few seals left to go. Five at the most. But there was nothing. No mention of the seals at all.
Throwing the book she had just been reading across the room, the princess leaned back in her chair closing her eyes - trying to think of where to go from there.
“I should have known I’d find you here.”
The voice startled her and she turned, ready to chastise her brother for leaving his fiancé all alone. But the man standing there wasn’t Balthazar. As much as Balthazar might resemble the deposed King - there was only one Satan. And he was standing there in the doorway with an amused look on his face. “I’m dreaming…”
“Are you?”
“I have to be. The final seal hasn’t been broken yet.”
“True.” He walked further into the room. “You should be sleeping. What has you up so late, Princess?”
“Lilith. She’s…we made a mistake in thinking she would play fair. She needs to be stopped.”
“Does she?” Coming to stand behind his daughter, Lucifer laid his hands on her shoulder. “She must die. I don’t disagree with you there. Meddlesome bitch that she is. But let her finish what she started. Let her do all the work. And then I’ll take care of her.”
“You’re going to kill her? Even after she lets you out? IF she lets you out?”
“Of course. As I’ve told you before, my darling one. I’ll fix everything - just as soon as I get home.”
“No.”
“No what? You don’t think I’ve heard the whispering throughout the realm? That I don’t know what’s been going on? You want me home. You know it’s for the best. Don’t let your brothers and mother convince you otherwise.”
“Balthazar said…”
“Oh, please. Tell me what the great disappointment said. Traitor. Coward. And I had such high hopes for him. For both of you. And while you have become everything I knew you could be. He…” Lucifer shook his head, his eyes and voice darkening. “He didn’t even have the balls to step up and rule. I’ll be doing him and his whore a favor when I slit his throat. Not right away, of course. No. First he will suffer. And then…when he has no screams nor blood left to give, only then will I put him out of his misery.”
“What?” Circe paled at that. He wouldn’t. Not to his own…
“He’s a traitor to the throne. He must and will die. If allowed to live, he will only attempt to bind me again. You don’t want that. I know you don’t.”
Circe wasn’t sure how to respond. Was this really just a dream? A nightmare? Or was this something more. She’d been seeing him in her dreams ever since Lilith broke the halfway mark. At first it was no big deal - just a flash of his face every once and while, like seeing someone you think you know in a crowd. But as of late it was more and more frequently. And she was no longer just seeing him - they were having full blown conversations. Freaky dreamscape bonding, if you will.
She had no idea what it meant. And until now, she hadn’t told anyone. But could she keep this to herself. What if Balthazar really was in danger?
“You look worried, Princess.” He moved again, coming to stand in front of her. “Don’t be. It has to be done.” He took her chin in his hand, tilting her head to look her in the eyes. “Soon, my darling girl. Very soon we’ll be together again.” He leaned in, laying a kiss on her forehead.
And then he was gone.
Looking around the library, Circe frowned, now almost certain she was not dreaming.
Fuck.
