Excellently characterized and thoughtfully thorough AU where Tony Stark isn't born with a silver spoon in his mouth. Tony is still Tony, but the consequences of his actions are a lot more...immediate when he's not a billionaire. I also really like the recasting of his relationships with Pepper and Rhodey.
Tony was right: He's handy with a mop.
Rhodes was right: Tony's bored out of his goddamn mind in 20 minutes.

She doesn't know how to turn her brain off of it and it drives her so crazy one night that going to the house at an ungodly hour to organize Tony's entire closet by color seems like A Very Important Task. Jarvis is so freaked out that he starts streaming whale calls and the sound of the ocean waves lapping against each other through the speakers.
"There have been various statistically significant studies indicating that nature sounds help the human body relax," he explains. "Your cortisol levels are extremely high, Miss Potts." Really nice look at Pepper over the course of Tony's time in Afghanistan.
