I guess I'd assumed that gametes, at least spermatozoon, multiply at such a quick rate because they are needed to replenish those sex cells which are discharged or otherwise lost. But that assumption was based on my 10th grade human physiology class and, because of our exchange, I decided that it was high time I brushed up on my knowledge of spermatogenesis. I'm now guessing that the real threat is that sexual germ cells might be irradiated and produce screwy, spermy offspring. I don't even want to think about how an x-ray might affect oogenesis :-).
