A lot of people have been asking me (both in the masspirg situation and outside it) just what the hell the global warming bill is. so here is the deal:
this past winter, there was supposed to be this regional plan that 8 states, including Massachusetts, were supposed to participate in that would cut down on global warming pollution a significant amount. it included forcing dirty power plants, which are the #1 source of global warming pollution in the U.S., to change some of their habits.
unfortunately, governor romney wants to run for president, and A LOT of his financial support comes from local power plant companies. so at the 11th hour, literally just before the plan was supposed to go into action, romney backed out and 7 other states went ahead without us. he was bought out by the power plant companies.
so now masspirg is pushing the senators and reps in MA to support the global warming bill this summer. it would force power plants to use filters on their smokestacks and reduce CO2 emissions by like 25 percent. we know romney will veto the bill, but we've been making a lot of progress, and now we only need to pressure ONE MORE senator to support the bill for romney's veto to be overruled.
this bill is extremely important; not just because it will reduce local global warming pollution, but for 2 other reasons as well:
1- Massachusetts is a political leader in the states, and we always have been. if we get this bill passed, it could be the start of a domino effect in this country and that would be incredibly helpful.
2- getting this bill passed would probably hurt romney's chances of running for president pretty seriously, at least in a financial sense.
it's important for young adults to get involved in these kinds of political efforts, on any level, whether its volunteering for groups like masspirg, writing letters to your local rep, or making a small contribution of even 10-20 bucks to groups like ours. groups like masspirg are non-profit and the only way we can keep our offices alive is through contributions from supporters. this isn't me shamelessly asking for money. whichever activist group you choose to support, i'm just saying get involved sooner rather than later. you're never too young to be politically active.
that was cheesy sounding, but i'm completely serious.
