chapter ten
Come recess time, Moonbin sat on an empty bench by the lobby of the main school building. Head titled upwards, he gazed at the morning sky, enjoying the feel of the gentle breeze brushing against his face. A sad smile grazed the young boy’s lips. He was reminded yet again by his disappearing act last Saturday night. He fervently hoped to get past this- phase as soon as possible. It was beginning to take a toll on his family.
He initially thought that his blackouts were connected with his parents’ death, but as time went by, he began to ponder that maybe there was something more to his lapses in consciousness. The voices seemed to be getting louder, the need to find something- or someone magnified. Helplessness and confusion stirred in his chest.
Numerous times he swore that he would not allow the burden of these emotions get the best of him, but even so, there were always the instances that his feelings tend to take control.
The young boy forced a smile. It was still morning and he didn’t want to be melancholic all throughout the day. Opening his backpack, he decided to eat the portion of the cookies he baked the previous night. Once the square, plastic container was in his hand, he picked one piece and took a bite. His thoughts wandered to Seulgi and if she was able to give his gift.
When Seulgi told him about Jaejoong’s accident with massive amounts of reassurance on her part that he was going to be okay and will probably be back at school in no time, Moonbin still felt as if he died just a little with the news. He could have sworn his heart broke, tears filling his eyes just with the thought of his Jaejoong-hyung getting hurt. He couldn’t for the life of him understand why that person mattered so much- but he did. Then, as if he wasn’t confused enough as it was, he had to learn of this Yunho person as well.
Flashback
‘He probably wouldn’t take it let alone eat it.’ Moonbin grimly thought as he stared at the plate of freshly baked cookies. ‘With the amount of girls that flocks around him, and- I couldn’t possibly give this to him myself considering my height and how fierce his admirers are. He’s probably going to think I’m weird too.” Moonbin sulked, elbows on the table, hand resting on his cheek as he directed said treat with a plaintive look. ‘Does hyung even like cookies?'
“Thank God you’re home I was beginning to worry.” came his aunt’s voice by the living room.
The voice that replied was none other than his annoying cousin. “Umma, I did tell you that it was going to take an hour at the most.”
“You know about the disturbances around in this region lately, I just don’t want anything bad happening to you.”
“But I don’t have time to have the pictures developed during the morning, you know that.”
Moonbin lifted his head and rolled his eyes. He could hear the whine in his cousin’s voice.
“Just go to the kitchen and eat your supper young lady.”
The young boy grinned, getting a perfect mental image of Seulgi being shooed away.
“And don’t forget to wash your plates once you’re done.”
“Binnie!” Seulgi squealed as she practically bounced into the kitchen. “Oh cookies!”
Moonbin swatted her hand away when she made a move to pick one. “Don’t even think about it.”
Seulgi gaped at him indignantly, looking deliberately offended. “What-“
“It’s not for you. It’s for Jaejoong-hyung.” he mumbled, glaring half-heartedly.
“But what about-”
“Yours is in the oven.” Moonbin supplied. Suelgi rushed towards said oven with great speed that had the young boy blinking. He stared, quite stunned at his cousin who was already on a chair, happily munching away. “Why are you so excited?”
Seulgi lightly tapped the paper envelop on the table that he could have sworn hadn't been there before. “I finally got the pictures I took last week developed.” she informed, giggling as she popped the whole cookie into her mouth. She proceeded to take the contents of the small bundle. One by one, she peered into them, a silly smile decorating her face.
Moonbin tried his best to appear unaffected as he stole quick glances on the materials on his cousin’s hand. Judging by Seulgi’s stalkerish character, there was not a doubt in his mind that the pictures would be of his Jaejoong-hyung.
Gritting his teeth, Moonbin looked down on the plate before him and glared hard.
“So I’m guessing you would want me to give the cookies to Jaejoong-sshi then?” Seulgi asked, eyes still fixed on her pictures.
Moonbin’s shoulders hunched in a lazy shrug before crossing his arms against his chest. “Well that depends on you.” he sighed with nonchalance. But deep inside him, he hoped that she would agree to his request. Was it really a good idea though?
“I’m sure Jaejoong-sshi would love your cookies Binnie. I mean, it’s your specialty after all.” The teenage girl encouraged and smirked as she leveled her younger cousin with a look. “But someone’s going to get seriously jealous and that person’s way too scary. Plus I don’t think I can handle him directing that glare of his at me. Besides, they’re together and in love and everything. Well at least the YunJae Movement thinks so too. I mean Binnie, Yunho-oppa kiss-”
Seulgi stopped from her tirade as if burned. “Oh god, I cannot believe I was just about to tell my twelve year old cousin about a guy kissing my Jaejoong-sshi who happens to be a guy too by the way and oh heck, why can’t I keep my mouth shut?” she ended with a groan, the pictures on her hand spilling all over the table as her head connected against it. “Oh but they look so cute together. Oh screw this, I’m turning into a YunJae fangirl.” moaning, she added. “My brain hurts.”
The young boy frowned, befuddled with her words. But one word got stuck in his head.
'Yunho.'
It was then that something caught his attention. He reached out a hand, picking up a picture amidst the mass of Jaejoong’s candid shots. He brought it closer for inspection and the instantly his eyes landed on the man in photo, Moonbin felt the air leave his lungs.
“Binnie?” Seulgi worriedly asked, noticing the frozen stupor Moonbin seemed to be in.
The young boy’s free hand clutched at his chest as myriads of indiscernible painful flashes raced through his thoughts. He couldn’t breathe. He needed air. “Noona.” he choked out as he practically felt molten lava hotness surge all throughout his system.
It was happening again. Moonbin wasn’t new to this feeling. It wasn’t the first time he experienced such sensations. It would actually be the second time he felt this suffocating and gripping gut reaction. “Water...” he rasped out, mouth running dry.
“Right. Hold on.” Seulgi quickly reached for the fridge and fetched him some water. She ran back to her cousin’s side and brought the filled glass to his lips. “Here.”
Moonbin greedily drank until the content was no more. For a while nothing seemed to happen. The hot suffocating sensation was still there until suddenly- it seemed easier to breathe.
Moonbin never let his hold on the picture go.
“I’m... I’m fine.” he whispered hoarsely, feeling the thick atmosphere begin to disperse and the pain in his chest to subside. Sweat trickled the side of his suddenly damp hair.
“Binnie you scared me.” Seulgi exclaimed face, painted with obvious fright. She took the glass of water from the young boy’s grip and walked over to the sink. “What was that about?” she asked, pacing back to him.
Moonbin didn't answer and gazed down at the picture in his hand instead, still feeling the slowly fading effect of the aftershocks. That was- weird, he mused as he felt a shiver run down his spine. He couldn’t be mistaken. He had a vivid recollection of experiencing the same exact feelings the first time he laid eyes on his Jaejoong-hyung’s picture.
“Omona!” Seulgi burst out, snatching the photo from Moonbin’s grasp and stared at it for a good half-minute. She looked at her cousin’s face then at Yunho’s annoyed one on the photo. It registered to her that the resemblance was uncanny. “Binnie you look just like him!” she exclaimed in amazement. Bringing the picture to the side of the young boy’s head, she continued. “You’re like a little Yunho. Wow! How come I never noticed this before?”
Moonbin could only sit there, baffled, until suddenly, the strange feelings he held for his Jaejoong-hyung began to extend to this Yunho person. He didn’t understand the feelings of attachment that he developed in such a short span of time for the man in the photo. But there was that feeling again- of being safe and protected- of being loved. With a shake of his head, he snatched the material from his cousin's hold. “I want this. Can I have this?"
“Binnie, are you sure you’re okay." Seulgi asked with a frown. "You went really pale just now.”
“I’m fine.” Binnie said, dismissing her worry off. He tried again. “I want this.”
“Well-”
“Thanks!” Moonbin said not giving her a chance to turn him down.
“Yah! Bae Moonbin!” Seulgi exclaimed but the young boy ignored her indignant shriek.
Picking the tray of cookies from the table, he placed it back inside the oven. “I’ll have this pretty and wrapped up by morning. You better not forget it before leaving for school.” he said, pointing a stern finger at her. She hurriedly ran past Seulgi who was demanding that he listened to a word she said but Moonbin wasn’t in the mood to have his ears chatted off.
He went up the flight of stairs and slammed his bedroom door shut. Once he was inside, he reached under his bed and felt for his very much treasured box. After pulling it out, he dropped it on to his covers. He took the lid off and picked up Jaejoong’s photo.
He stared at both portraits until slumber finally took him into its peaceful clutches. That night he slept soundly while holding both their pictures close to his chest. He dreamt of a place bathed magnificent light and beauty, of talking trees, animals of the kind he’s never seen before roaming free; of beautiful flowers and plants blossomin, streams of clear, pure water and of great white walls of what appeared to be a castle at the middle of a clearing.
The place was ethereal- and felt eerily familiar.
“You’re going to be meeting them soon.” he heard a gentle, voice say. “Soon my grandchild.”
End Flashback
“Who am I going to meet soon?” He knew those words were nothing more but a figment of his nightly imaginations yet somehow Moonbin couldn’t help but hope that maybe-
The bell rang indicating that recess time was over. Quickly, he stashed away his box of cookies inside his backpack and flung his bag on one shoulder. Moonbin took a single step when suddenly surges of electric-like current pierced his brain.
'I want nothing more than to see him again. I would give anything to have him back.'
Moonbin grimaced and clutched at his head as another set of word onslaught infiltrate his thoughts. The young boy desperately willed the throbbing ache to go away when the voices began to pummel inside his head. Moonbin feared for what was sure to come.
"No." he groaned through gritted teeth, fighting off the overwhelming urge to give in to unconsciousness. "Arrgghhh!" Grunting wholeheartedly, Moonbin only had a moment to notice several kids crowding in on him before everything turned black.
**
"Binnie ah, are you alright?" a concerned voice of a kid was heard. But the child that was asked didn't seem to hear any of the ruckus around him as he made his way through the crowd without a word nor a moment's glance.
The expressions in his eyes were blank and haunting.
**
“I cannot believe you totally joined the YunJae movement’s craziness.”
Seulgi turned her head and waved an intimidating pair of chopsticks across Boa’s face. “YunJae is real.” she declared, a challenging look flashing across her eyes.
It was noon and they were currently at the cafeteria for their lunch break.
“Whatever happened to your never ending and undying love for Jaejoong-sshi?”
“I still love my Jaejoong-sshi of course.” Seulgi replied with conviction. “But I mean seriously, at first I nearly had a heart attack when I heard about the rumors of the new guy kissing him but thinking back to the days that he wasn’t around, I noticed that Jaejoong-sshi looked so sad and confused and depressed and desperate and oh gosh, it was so painful watching him.”
Suelgi clutched a hand to her chest in a dramatic fashion. “It was so obvious how much he loved Yunho-sshi. He barely seemed connected with the world ya know. It was like his mind was floating- somewhere. I mean, I can only wish for him to feel such emotions for me that way but I know that’s it’s never going to happen. But of course that doesn’t change the fact that I still love him.” Seulgi paused as if recalling something of great importance then brightly smiled. “And oh oh, did you see how his eyes seemed so alive all of a sudden again?” she giggled, completely engulfed in her fangirling. “I mean, they were practically sparkling.”
Boa could only roll her eyes at her best friend’s antics. “Anyway, when do you plan on giving Binnie’s gift to Jaejoong-sshi?” she quipped, eyeing the wrapped box on the table.
“I was going to earlier.” Seulgi replied, facing the five male teens’ direction and sighed. “I wanted to give Jaejoong-sshi the present this morning but there was like a human flood in their classroom and before I even had any chance to approach him Yunho-sshi snarled at me.”
Boa chuckled. “He is pretty possessive. I’ve noticed.” she said with a smirk. “And he reminds of Moonbin.” when Seulgi merely blinked, she continued. “Your cousin sure does have a rather strong fascination for Jaejoong-sshi. I do remember how he pulled your hair and screamed at you before when you couldn’t stop fangirling about him becoming your future husband.”
“Ouch.” Seulgi grimaced. “There’s no need to remind me. It really hurt that time.”
“Hey, you two keep it down. We’re trying to watch the news.”
Both Seulgi and Boa looked at their classmate before glancing up at the cafeteria screen.
‘The remains of the people that had gone missing from two weeks ago at Hotel Marrionette have been found. Among the ones that have been identified are Han Yongshik, Han Jae Kyung, Lee Shinwon, Go Eunhan...”
“R-r-r-emains? Aish, what exactly happened to those people?” a trembling voice asked.
“It’s done by vampires. With all the blood loss and fang marks? Its vampires man.”
“Shut up! We’re scared shitless as it is. Quit playing around.” a girl reprimanded.
Seulgi’s ecstatic mood from the morning about his discovery of Yunho and Jaejoong’s supposed marriage disappeared at the drop of a hat. She looked to her best friend who was looking intently at the news, fingers clasped underneath her chin, elbows propped.
“Boa? What’s wrong? You don’t really believe its vampires do you?”
The contemplative girl glanced at her and forced a smile. “Of course not. I was just thinking about your cute little cousin. He still spaces out a lot doesn’t he? It’s quite worrying.”
Suelgi closed her eyes, trying to shake off the feeling of sudden overwhelming worry for the kid. All the serial killings and the way the reports have been describing the attacks definitely fitted into the whole vampire scenario. As ridiculous as it may sound, she couldn’t help but feel like there was some truth in the reports. And to think her cousin has been disappearing and wandering off to God knew exactly where at the late hours of the night.
‘Dae Heemin, Yong MongReul and Jeom Minho. We greatly advise everyone to not wander the streets at night and at least walk in groups while going back to your respective homes and families.’
“Hyung!”
Suelgi’s gaze immediately zeroed in on the scene happening several feet from her, the rest of their schoolmate doing the same thing. Yunho was standing there, posture positively rigid.
“I thought you said you were through with this?” It was Yoochun that spoke, voice dripping with concern as he gripped Yunho’s arm, effectively halting him from his tracks.
Seulgi frowned in wonder. Since when did Yoochun and Yunho became close?
“I know that. I just…I need to be left alone.” Yunho’s voice seemed painful.
Jaejoong stood up as well, their fingers intertwining almost instantly. Seulgi couldn’t help but melt a little. “Chun, I’ll handle this. You three, go back to the classroom once lunch is done.”
It was like they conversed merely using their eyes. Not long after, Yoochun, Junsu and Changmin nodded. Jaejoong smiled before dragging Yunho out of the cafeteria doors.
Seulgi felt baffled at the exchange she witnessed. He watched them go, her eyes widening when she realized she was presented with another chance to give Moonbin’s present.
Quickly taking the aforementioned material in her hand, Seulgi was instantly on her feet. “I’ll be real quick.” she said, waving a hand at her friend then jogged after them.
**
‘Hyung, I thought you said you were through with this?’
His brother was right. As much as he wanted to go and kill those Shito bastards and maybe, possibly, help lessen the anger and the pain that seeped into him about the news of those innocent people that Chaos had devoured, he had to understand that he was in fact already through with everything. He was done with hunting and with all the suffering it entailed.
Having lived nine hundred long years of doing clean up work along with the constant negative emotions coiling around him like a snake every damn day of his life, he was simply fed up with it all. More importantly, he had vowed to never jeopardize his family’s life.
Over the years, he made enemies of varying kinds coming from different parts of the world and he’d be damned if he allowed those past battle scars along with the complications that they bring hurt them in the smallest sense. He couldn’t get into trouble- especially now.
“Are you done with your internal battle or do I have to punch you in the face?” Jaejoong dangerously asked. Yunho forced his eyes to find focus, only realizing then that they were already somewhere at the back of the school and Jaejoong had him backed up against a wall.
“Whatever happened to those people was not your fault.” When Yunho couldn’t seem to get a word out of his mouth, Jaejoong continued in a softer tone. “It’s all in the past. Let it be.”
Yunho stared at him for a few moments until his shoulders dropped and he sagged against the wall behind him. “I know.” he said, digging the heel of a hand to his forehead. Jaejoong knelt in front of him, resting both hand on his knees. “But I still feel like it was partly my fault. If I hadn’t screwed up and had killed Chaos sooner-”
“Don’t let their deaths burden you with guilt.” Jaejoong interrupted, silencing him with a finger on his lips. “Things always don’t work the way we want them to- but we try to accept them and move on.” Yunho slowly lifted his head. He could see the obvious pain in his husband’s eyes and knew exactly who was in his mind. “We live and try to forget.”
Reaching out a hand, Yunho caressed the surface the golden locket that rested by Jaejoong’s chest. “I don’t want to forget him.” he said, sadness evident in his tone. After all this time, he still couldn’t muster the needed acceptance for his son’s death. He didn’t think he will ever be able to move past the grief.
“We won’t.” Jaejoong replied, not daring to say anything more lest his voice betray him.
Silence stretched between them until Jaejoong scooted forward. He tugged at Yunho’s pants, requesting for him to spread his legs so he could sit against him. Yunho did what he was told. Jaejoong smiled, capturing his lips in a brief kiss before positioning himself on Yunho’s middle. Leaning back against his chest, strong arms immediately envelop him from behind.
With eyes fluttering close, Jaejoong cocked his head back and rested it against Yunho’s shoulder, sinking further into his embrace. He heaved out a deep sigh while the other man burrowed his head into the crook of his neck, inhaling his scent.
They stayed in that position for a while, content of relishing each other’s presence as they held onto the other for support, anchor and comfort.
Yunho thanked every higher entity known to mankind for bringing Jaejoong back into his life. Jaejoong never fails to make him feel like he could bear the world’s greatest pain whenever he was in his arms. He would never love anyone else as much as he loved him.
Without warning, Yunho’s jaws clenched when he felt a presence lurk around the corner. He mentally cursed. Fangirls and fanboys alike, they always made him see red with jealousy.
“You’re tensing.” Jaejoong said, craning his neck a little to the side by Yunho’s temple.
Yunho’s arms around him tightened their hold. “Someone’s coming.”
Jaejoong’s brows furrowed before it dawned on him just who Yunho was referring to when he caught sight of her approaching form. “It’s just Bae Seulgi.” he said, shaking his head in mild amusement. He was already quite used to her constantly trailing him around school that it didn’t bother him anymore. At least she wasn’t anything like the ones who tried to grab choice parts of his anatomy whenever they were given the chance. He shuddered at the reminder.
“Don’t worry about her Yunho-yah. Compared to the others she’s pretty harmless.”
“I still don’t like-“
“Ummm, e-excuse me.” Seulgi’s voice cut Yunho mid-reply.
Looking up at the young teenage girl who was looking quite flustered yet was somehow looking determined as hell- both boys regarded her expectantly. Well, Jaejoong looked friendly enough as he pulled himself up to his feet while Yunho stayed sitting on the ground as if blatantly telling her that he couldn’t care less about her presence.
“Do you have any business with us?” Yunho coldly asked, targeting her with an icy glare
The girl reflexively stood at attention. “I’m sorry. I know I’m interrupting-“
“That’s an understatement.” Yunho snorted to which Jaejoong shot him a reprimanding look.
“Be nice.”
“I don’t want to.”
“Yunho-yah, please? For me?” Jaejoong was pouting and pleading so cutely at the same time. The Shinso prince inwardly groaned. The combination was fatal. He could never say no to that.
“Fine.” With a sigh, he slowly stood up, dusting off his pants in the process. He looked at the intruder, hands crossed against his chest. He frowned. “Hey, you were that girl from earlier.”
Seulgi gulped when Yunho gave her a scrutinizing look.
“You heard me talking about our marriage. And you believed it.” Being subjected to his narrowed eyes, Seulgi somewhat wished for the ground to open up and swallow her whole. Yunho looked so mighty dangerous and intimidating, she badly wanted to bolt. “So tell me, Seulgi-sshi you really want us to be together? You don’t think it’s weird? You don’t give a shit about society’s standards? You don’t want Jaejoong for yourself? Because you know, I don’t bode well with anyone that tries to take him away from me.”
“Yun, you’re seriously scaring her.” Jaejoong released an exasperated sigh before directing the girl with a smile. “I’m sorry about that. He just woke up on the wrong side of the bed this morning.”
Seulgi's fear of Yunho slowly abated as she practically felt herself melt at the gentleness in her Jaejoong-sshi’s voice- but she quickly collected her bearings. As much as she loved him, she loved him more when he’s with Yunho. She resolutely squashed the Jaejoong fangirl in her and let her YunJae fangirl side wildly wave its banner. “So, you two really married?”
“Keep wondering.” Yunho tersely said. “And it’s really none of your business.”
Jaejoong elbowed his husband in the side. “Yah, didn’t I tell you to be nice?”
Yunho pouted at him while Seulgi giggled at the cute exchange between the couple. The Shinso prince shot her with an annoyed look. Gulping, the girl kept her mouth shut. Yunho hummed, lips curving into a triumphant smirk.
“Jaejoong-sshi, Yunho-shhi.” Seulgi timidly tried which earned her another glare from Yunho. She chuckled nervously and handed them two gift wrapped boxes. “It’s a gift for you both. They’re cookies and my cousin baked them. When I told him about the accident-”
Yunho and Jaejoong shared a glance, recalling Heechul’s excuse about their absences.
“He was really worried, so he made you his specialty as a get well present. He’s only twelve but they’re really good. He even wrote you guys a card. I hope you’ll like it.”
Yunho’s eyes softened as he pulled the small card attached to the present. A child baked for them? The very thought warmed his heart. He was about to open the card when Heechul suddenly arrived. “Jaejoong-sshi, can I talk to you for a second?” the VP asked.
Yunho and Jaejoong blinked and muttered in unison. “Heechul-sshi?” “Heechul ah?”
“Took me forever to find you both, what have you been up- to?” pausing and directing the girl with a wondering look, he continued. “Who’s this?”
“Seulgi… Bae Seulgi.” the girl replied wide eyed and awed as she stared at the Student Council Vice President’s inquiring gaze. ’Wow, I’m surrounded by three really cool guys.’
Heechul’s eyes darted back to Yunho. “I’ll have to borrow Jaejoong-sshi for a while.”
Yunho shot the young sorcerer with a plaintive look. “What are you borrowing him for?”
Heechul smirked, crossing arms against his chest. “I’m not going to molest him if that’s what you’re worried about.”
“That’s not funny.” Yunho griped, irritation lacing his words. "You have the worst jokes ever."
The young sorcerer rolled his eyes as he walked closer. "I just have some things to talk to him about school stuff. Don’t forget Yunho-sshi that he is still the Student President after all."
"Tch." Yunho cussed at the smirking sorcerer. Turning to Jaejoong, he held the back of his neck and sealed their lips together in a heated kiss. Heechul's eyes immediately wandered elsewhere while Seulgi pointedly stared. He pulled away, smiling. "Don't take long."
"I won’t." Jaejoong answered, looking lovingly into his eyes while softly caressing his cheek. “Can you take this?” he asked, handing Yunho the present. “We’ll open it together later okay?”
Yunho nodded taking the handed material. “Sure.”
Jaejoong looked to Seulgi and sent her a grateful smile. “Thank you and say thank you too to your cousin for us. I might also cook him something if I have the time.”
Seulgi could only gape at such a tender gaze she was receiving. “O-okay.”
After another chaste kiss with Yunho, the Shinso heir left, following Heechul closely behind.
"So..." Yunho began, holding the two presents gingerly in his arms, smiling at the endearing thought of the thoughtful child. Remembering the card meant for him, he held it closer to his face, opening it in the process the same time that he absently asked for the kid’s name.
“Oh, my cousin’s name is Moonbin.”
The presents almost fell from his grasp as soon as he heard the words the same time that his eyes landed on the picture inserted in the middle of the card. Yunho’s heart nearly stopped.
Yunho-hyung,
Hi! I know you don’t know me but I heard about your accident.
I hope you’re doing better now and that you’re resting well. ^_^
I baked these cookies for you and Jaejoongie-hyung.
Hope you like it. I worked hard in preparing it. ;D
Love,
Moonbin
P.S. That’s me in the picture doing the saranghe pose >.<
Seulgi-noon bullied me into doing it. I’m sorry if it’s lame T_T
**
“I saw the little outburst your husband did at the cafeteria.” Heechul pointed out the moment they arrived by the waiting sheds near the infirmary. “I fear that Yunho-sshi will do something reckless. Sooner or later my comrades are going to be following me around campus to spy on me. It is best that the five of you keep a low profile and stay out of trouble."
“You don’t have to worry about it.” Jaejoong let out a soft breath. “I know Yun’s considered our well being into the equation and I’m confident that he won’t take any reckless decisions that might put us in danger.” His eyes turned thoughtful as he remembered a certain conversation he had with his husband. “He wants a normal life more than anything.”
A memory rose in Heechul’s mind recalling his own conversation with the Shinso prince. “Yeah he-” he trailed off when the other suddenly gasped. “Jaejoong-sshi, what’s wrong?”
Jaejoong fell to his knees when a sudden sense of overwhelming dread coiled itself around him. “I’m not-” clutching a hand to his chest, he continued. “I’m not sure. But my heart- feels like it’s getting torn into pieces.”
“Jaejoong-sshi, come on I’ll take you to the infirmary.” Heechul squatted beside him as he lifted the other’s arm around his neck and held him upright by the waist. Jaejoong barely seemed to have any energy to stand at all. It was then that it caught Heechul’s notice how a good number of students were running towards the main building in haste.
“Hey you!” Heechul called out to a group of girls that ran past him.
Three girls screeched into a halt, whirling around to face him. Collective gasps escaped the trio when their eyes landed on Jaejoong’s seemingly weakened condition. “What happened to Jaejoong-sshi?” one of the girls asked in alarm.
“That’s what I’m trying to figure out.” Heechul said through gritted teeth then made a nodding gesture at the ruckus that was currently happening at a distance. “What’s all the hype about?”
“They say there’s a little kid standing at the edge of the rooftop of the main building.”
“What?” Heechul almost shrieked. “How could a kid get there without anyone noticing?”
“I saw a kid earlier loitering around but I didn’t it take to mind. It’s not exactly a rare.” the girl with short hair explained then gasped, wide-eyed. “I knew I saw that kid from somewhere!” her gaze fixed Jaejoong’s pained expression. “He looked a lot like the transfer student!”
Jaejoong whole body went rigid. There was a kid that looked a lot like Yunho?
‘Umma, Appa, come find me. Please, come find me.’ a sobbing voice rang in his head.
“Moonbin.” he gasped, clutching his chest tighter, eyes widening as saucers. Cocking his head back, Jaejoong fixed his gaze at the direction that the students were heading at. He swallowed thickly, feeling his heart ram against his ribcage.
Could it be him? Could it be his son? Should he dare to hope? But even before his mind had enough time to let it all sink in - his body had already moved out of its own accord.
“Jaejoong-sshi!” Heechul frantically called out when Jaejoong suddenly tore out of his grasp and ran with great speed towards the general direction of the main building. ’Moonbin’ he idly thought. Wasn’t that the name of their son? Eyes snapping wide open in stark realization, Heechul immediately ran after the Shinso heir.
**
When Jaejoong arrived at the grounds of the main building where the students huddled and whispered, gazes all locked upwards, pointing at a small figure who appeared to be gripping the railing behind him- Jaejoong knew- he was one hundred percent sure that it was his son. Even at such a far distance, despite all the years, despite the fact that he was but a year old when he last saw him, he could never be mistaken.
Jaejoong hurriedly ran inside the building, hurtled past the lobby and quickly made his way through the stairs, taking two steps at a time while tears streamed down his cheeks. Moonbin was alive. Their son was alive and he was calling out to them. Did Yunho hear his calls? Did Yunho feel the same sensations race through his body at an alarming rate? Felt the pull and the need? Could he feel and hear their son’s desperate cries like he did right that instant?
Reaching the last floor of the building, Jaejoong practically growled when he saw a huddle of students by the doorway to the rooftop all helplessly struggling to get the door opened. “It won’t budge- Jaejoong-sshi?!” a male student exclaimed when he saw the Student Council President’s approaching figure.
“Get out of my way!” Jaejoong thundered. The group of young male teenagers regarded him with nervous looks before making a path for their President to pass through. It didn’t miss their notice that tears were streaming down his face.
To everyone’s surprise, Jaejoong merely flung the door open like it was made of paper.
“Moonbin!” Jaejoong called out the instant he emerged out into the asphalt clearing. And with sheer desperation in his voice, needing- wanting for his son to acknowledge him, the Shinso heir cried out once more. "Binnie, umma’s here!"
**
Yunho’s hand clutched against his chest as he ran so fast he practically whizzed past through everything in his path. He didn’t care that the girl, Seulgi was yelling for him to slow down, didn’t care that he nearly shoved the girl off whom he guessed was Suelgi's friend when she went looking for them and frantically told her, told him that ‘Moonbin’ was standing outside the railing of the main building’s rooftop seemingly detached to the world.
Seulgi’s face had crumpled into a look of pure devastation and exclaimed, ‘He’s spaced out again!’ It was then that the voice of a child who was pleading for his umma and appa to come find him infiltrated his thoughts.
And despite the reality he had grudgingly carried with him all those years- that his son had died and they would never be able to see him again, Yunho knew- deep inside his heart - that the ‘Moonbin’ in the photo and Seulgi’s best friend was referring to was his and Jaejoong’s child. Yunho felt hope of the type that he's never dealt with before.
“Yunho-sshi.” Heechul breathlessly called out, running to meet him when he arrived at the grounds of the main building. “Jaejoong’s stormed to the top of the building. He moved so fast, I couldn’t-”
Yunho’s blood froze at the realization that Jaejoong must have felt the same pull too. With keen, sharp eyes, Yunho cocked his head back and- was convinced for the second time that he was looking at his own face, only centuries younger.
‘He takes after you, you know.’
‘He’s looking more and more like you everyday.’
‘You will grow up and look exactly just like your appa, right Binnie?’
A choked sob escaped Yunho’s throat at the reality of the situation. He was right to never lose hope. His baby, his baby was alive. He was- Yunho’s eyes snapped wide open.
Why the hell was he up there?!
“There are lots of students milling around, you can’t afford to do anything reckless.” Heechul persistently yet quietly hissed, barely gripping his arm before Yunho jerked away from his grasp.
“They’re my family.” Yunho growled through gritted teeth before sprinting with near lightning speed towards the lobby entrance.
Yunho had to get to them fast. That was the only thought that raced through his thoughts. The second he arrived at the second floor, seeing that there wasn’t anyone around, he tapped into the spirit within and teleported from there. When the world blinked back into focus, Yunho staggered forward, eyes instantly zeroing in on Jaejoong’s figure as he leaped off the railing at the edge of the building.
“Jaejoong!” he screamed, quickly getting up to his knees and lunged himself after his husband, kicking his foot backwards on the metal bars and jumped into the air, pushing himself downwards as he felt the harsh slap of the wind on his face.
“Umma! Appa!” the child screamed, arms desperately reaching out towards them.
When Yunho’s gaze landed on the small boy’s features, an onslaught of tears began to blur his vision once more. He needed to reach them. He need to fucking reach them!
Straining his arms, Yunho felt relief when his fingers closed around Jaejoong’s wrist the same time the Jaejoong was able to grab the child’s outstretched hand; not wasting a moment’s breath in pulling him close. Yunho wrapped his other arm around the boy’s waist the instant he was able to reach for him, encasing both husband and son in his embrace, holding on to them tight.
“Yun.” came Jaejoong’s weak murmur by his ear. “Our Moonbin’s… alive.”
A sharp stabbing sense of alarm gripped the Shinso prince seeing his husband’s eyes slip shut, however it was also in that instant did he feel his own eyes began to droop. The Shinso prince only had a split second to notice a blinding white light envelop and flood his entire world and a fleeting moment to feel strong arms holding him from behind.
