At long last I managed to take photos of the socks I made.
As poor Harold is well aware, I'm ridiculously picky about my socks. Most womens's socks are too thin for my taste, so I usually wait until October when they put the heavier winter weight socks out and stock up like made. Then I ration them out during the year since I can only get them a couple months of the year anyway. The solution? Knit my own socks, so I have them any time of year I want them!
I made these using the
Widdershins pattern from Knitty, using size 3 DPNs. I modified the pattern slightly by adding 4 stitches to the circumference to make sure there would be plenty of room for my wide feet. They're great when I first put them on, but after wearing for a while end up feeling a little on the loose side. Also, they're just a tad too long to stay up on their own, so I end up wearing them with the top edge turned down. That's how I wear all my socks anyway, so it's not really a hardship.
As you can see, I didn't try to match up the stripes on this pair. I figured it's my first pair and it would drive me mad trying to make them match exactly. The yarn is KnitPicks Felici self striping yarn. After seeing how cool it looked to have the stripes forming automatically, I promptly ordered 2 more colorways for more socks.
This is the first sock from my second pair made with the same pattern. This pair I'm knitting with size 2 dpns to see if they fit a little better than the last pair. I'm nearing the halfway point on the other sock of this pair, just about to start the gusset. This pair I'm actually trying to match the stripes. So far, so good.
I'm thinking my next foray into socks will be
Thuja, which looks like it might knit up a little faster than Widdershins. The first pair will likely be a gift for my dad, who is also ridiculously picky about his socks, just in a different way.
