A Dangerous Method

Well, today is the last of the holidays for me. Classes start a week from tomorrow, so I have to hit the ground running and get a lot of things done starting tomorrow. Not today. :) So my husband and I went to see Dangerous Method and had a late lunch at the Original Pancake House (as sort of a 'fie on dietary resolutions' thing). So to my micro-review:

I liked the movie a lot, but it's not one I would rec to everybody. Definitely go see it if: (1) you are a Viggo-admirer (check) and/or (2) you are interested in intellectual history (check). Winner on both those counts. Mortensen is, as always IMHO, brilliant. His performance richly deserved the Golden Globe nomination that it received. Subtle, nuanced, quiet, compelling - and convincing as Freud. The edge of his mouth, between the beard and the moustache, can, all by itself, out-act most people out there. Fassbender was excellent as well. Although her performance has been criticized, I thought K Kneightly did a wonderful job - not any more over the top that appropriate when you're playing an hysteric.

It's definitely a movie for grown-ups, to which I say 'yay and thank god.' There are too few. However, after seeing it I understand why they didn't put it in wide release. It has a slow pace, especially at first, so for folks who aren't interested in the period and/or psychoanalysis it might not be their cup of tea. I'm glad I saw it in the theater, because all three performances are worth seeing on the big screen, and the period details, landscapes, etc. are beautiful.
