[Background] Not much is known about Treize Khushrenada's background, though he was the son of fairly wealthy European aristocrats and grew up in a very privileged lifestyle, with the finest schooling and training money could buy on a wide range of subjects from diplomacy to mobile suit piloting. When Treize was very young - no more than 19 - he was already a piloting instructor on the colony X18999, where he met a young woman named Leia Barton, and the two struck up a close companionship. Though the two would eventually part ways, they conceived a child in their time together, whom Leia would name Mariemaia.

By the time the five Gundams come to earth for Operation Meteor, Treize - now a Duke - had been promoted to the rank of Colonel, and was placed in charge of the Specials, the elite mobile suit pilots of the United Earth Sphere Alliance. Even at his young age, Treize was already quite ambitious, and many of the Specials were members of a more secret organization: the Organization of the Zodiac, or OZ.

Treize confided in his close friend Zechs Merquise - OZ's top ace - that he resented the UESA's leadership, and in fact believed that if they had not been in power, the Gundam disaster would never have happened. When pro-peace members of the UESA leadership decide to hold an emergency meeting to press for peace with the colonies, Treize secretly leaks the information to the Gundam pilots, leading them to believe that the gathering is, in fact, a council of war. When the Gundams predictably attack, destroying the transport carrying the pacifists, Treize has one of the top remaining Generals broadcast to Earth and the colonies alike that it was, in fact, the Gundams that ruined this hope for peace, turning sentiment against the five pilots.

Shortly after, Treize has his lieutenant, Lady Une, execute said General, eliminating all major rivals for power within the UESA government. Around the globe, all of Treize's Specials - revealing their loyalty to OZ - get the upper hand on their comrades, either making them swear allegiance to OZ or destroying them outright. Treize seizes control over most of the globe virtually overnight.

Chang Wufei, one of the five pilots, is furious at Treize's manipulation, and attempts an assassination, easily defeating Lady Une's customized Leo Mobile Suit. Treize calmly beckons Wufei onto the bridge of his ship, challenging him to a one-on-one swordfight. Though Treize quickly defeats the younger pilot, he lets him go, impressed by the boy's skill - and seeing something of his own ideals in him.

While he was technically the dictator of Earth as the head of OZ, Treize's power was not absolute, and he was technically beholden to the Romefeller Foundation, the collection of wealthy aristocrats who were OZ's financial backers. Treize strongly disapproves of Romefeller's Mobile Doll program - the development of autonomous, AI-controlled Mobile Suits that can fight without needing a pilot - and goes so far as to personally sabotaging a demonstration, dispatching some of the latest prototypes in a simple, unmodified Leo.

As tensions mount between Treize and the Romefeller authority, he also found his hands full dealing with Zechs, whose constant breach of military law in order to get a fair fight with Gundam pilot Heero Yuy could have resulted in his imprisonment and court-martial. Treize helps cover up his various transgressions, even helping him fake his death and escape to space when he is eventually captured.

It isn't long before Treize's vehement opposition to the Mobile Dolls proves too much to bear for the Romefeller leadership, and he is forced to step down by their leader, Duke Dermail. Treize is confined to house arrest in Luxembourg for a good while in the middle of the series, though his influence does not end there. A group of loyal soldiers calling themselves the Treize Faction rebel against Romefeller, and Treize himself is hard at work at designing a new Mobile Suit using captured Gundam technology - a MS that will embody all of the virtue and glory he sees in war.

Lady Une, who is also still loyal to “His Excellency,” is uncovered as a spy by Romefeller's Chief Engineer Tsubarov, who attempts to kill her by shooting. However, Une survives his attempted murder, albeit in a deep coma.

Treize and Heero Yuy exchange words and viewpoints shortly after the series' midpoint, and he effectively hands Heero the keys to his new Gundam Epyon, asking the boy if he thinks either of them have a future - Heero does not answer. (Later on, Heero and Zechs would swap the Epyon and the Wing Gundam Zero, believing the other to be a better fit for their own skills).

Zechs then uses the Epyon to join a group of colony-dwelling rebels, the White Fang, who intend to settle the dispute between space and Earth permanently - by wiping out all life on the planet's surface. White Fang soldiers assassinate Duke Dermail, and Treize is asked to return to his role as Commander-in-Chief.

Wasting no time, Treize rebuilds and upgrades Zechs' Tallgeese, making the new Tallgeese II into his own personal MS. Knowing that the upcoming battle against the White Fang will likely be his last, Treize bids farewell to the comatose Lady Une, leaving flowers by her bedside and confessing that he “may have been a little bit in love with her all along.” Treize then heads into battle, leading the OZ forces against Zechs' White Fang and their Mobile Dolls.

Une awakes during the climactic battle, wasting no time in taking over as Treize's chief of staff, saving him from a blast from the White Fang's Space Fortress Libra. Once the five Gundam pilots - with whom Treize has a temporary truce for the battle - disable the Libra and the battle has been effectively won, Treize finally decides to settle the score with Chang Wufei on the boy's chosen battlefield: Mobile Suit combat.

Wufei asks Treize if he knows just how many people have given their lives to satisfy Treize's ambition, to which he replies that yes, he does. He knows exactly how many people have died - friend and foe alike - in the conflicts he's instigated, and makes a note to Lady Une to update the number once this current battle is finished and to give him the names of the dead.

To Treize, their deaths were sad - and he vowed never to forget them - but also necessary. For conflict and war to truly have any meaning, there must be a risk, and there must be a loss. Removing the destruction and sacrifice from war - as Romefeller was trying to do with their Mobile Dolls - means that war is no longer seen as something to be avoided, and in fact loses all significance whatsoever.

Treize then charges Wufei one final time, and his Tallgeese II is speared through the chest by the Altron Gundam's Beam Trident. Treize thanks Wufei, telling him that this is a beautiful way to die - in battle, at the hands of someone whom he respects - and then tells Milliardo Peacecraft/Zechs Merquise that he'll “be waiting on the other side.” The Tallgeese II explodes, and Treize dies with a smile on his face.

[Personality] Treize Khushrenada is charming and incredibly charismatic, inspiring near-fanatical devotion to those who follow him, and often able to persuade those who oppose him to see it his way. He is an aristocrat in the true meaning of the word, who lives by the code of chivalry and expressing the belief that matters of honor are best settled in terms of single combat.

This polite, gentlemanly exterior seems to be at odds with his ruthless pursuit of his ambitions. Treize is forever scheming and plotting, and will stop at nothing to pursue or hold on to power. When it comes to his plans, Treize has very few scruples... however, he is incredibly reluctant to abandon the ones he does have.

Yet even that is a front - or at least, not the entire story. Treize is extremely loyal to those he considers friends and/or respects (admittedly, not many), and - as seen with Leia Barton and later Lady Une - is on some level capable of genuine love (a fact which does surprise him upon realizing it). Though he can be utterly ruthless, he seems to dislike hurting others, and expresses genuine regret for every death he's caused in pursuit of his goals.

Treize's views on war are at the center of his character. On the one hand, he believes war to be a necessary (indeed, inevitable), honorable, and beautiful way for humanity to resolve its conflicts, and a way through which men can aspire to become more than they are. This only holds true, though, because something utterly precious - human life - is at stake. Once a life is taken, it can never be returned, and war is given meaning through this ultimate sacrifice.

Treize sees the Romefeller Foundation's Mobile Doll program as a rejection of this fundamental truth about war, and believes that humanity has gone too long without a truly catastrophic conflict - and have forgotten why war is in fact a last resort, and why peace is precious. With this in mind, one might conclude that Treize's final battle had this aim in mind - to remind humanity the true horror of war, and to eliminate the world's warlords (including himself) so that there would be a meaningful peace again, instead of stagnation.

[Specialties/Abilities] Treize is an expert politician and manipulator, whose ability to react quickly to almost any unforeseen situation comes from A.) an incredibly accurate sense of prediction, B.) an extremely quick mind with a talent for improvisation, or C.) both. Treize also excels in matters of warfare. He is an extraordinarily talented tactician, being able to fight equally against the superior technology of Zechs' White Fang troops. He is shown as an expert sharpshooter (with a fondness for traditional hunting), a superb European-style fencer, and - last but not least - a natural mobile suit pilot. Despite the Altron Gundam's superior firepower compared to his Tallgeese II, he had the upper hand against Wufei for most of the fight - though maybe that just says something about Wufei. (Likely not, considering the ease with which Treize dispatched the Mobile Dolls).

Oh, and he also designed the Epyon, Tallgeese II, and Tallgeese III Mobile Suits from virtually scratch.

[Affection] Good question. Treize tends to be fairly aloof physically, though the fact that he has a daughter indicates that he's not totally without occasional intimate feelings. It's rare for him to be affectionate, though, though he will be very loyal to the few he feels understand him.

[Fighting] Treize is very skilled at fighting - at least, by normal human standards - and is very fond of duels, though rarely to the death. He will defend himself if attacked, though hesitates to kill unnecessarily.

[Other Facts] Treize is a motherfucking pimp.
